When Hatton promotions started out, they put on a lot of exciting, well balanced cards, and signed a handful of promising prospects to supplement some older wiser heads who were already at title level. But 4 years on it's clear that they've developed a small time mentality - yes they've had the misfortune of being discarded by sky after one seemingly innocuous sin, (providing a mediocre undercard to the Khan - McCloskey bout), but even before this there were signs that Ricky and co were not willing to speculate. They could've tried to bring Bundrage over for Ryan Rhodes, but set him the ridiculous task of besting Saul Alvarez in the stifling heat of a Mexican summer. They've twiced allowed the best fighter in their stable to travel abroad to locations notoriously difficult to win points decisions, and lo and behold, twice Murray has returned empty handed. This despite there being a very beatable champ at the weight (Geale). They allowed Munroe to stagnate and hardly put a challenge his way until they essentially fed him to Quigg. They even couldn't finance a second IBO title shot at home for Matthew, after his 'interim' WBA bout fell through! So what does the future hold for them? Do you think after this latest disappointment they might decide to gamble with the finances in an effort to develop Murray or Quigg into a marquee name, who can help to manufacture a platform on which they can grow as a promotional outfit? Or will they just fold if Quigg and/or Murray decide to jump ship?
I think a tv deal and they will be fine They have good fighters on their books and even if they lose quigg they have some good prospects and still signing boys I hope for ricky and the strong stable with world class lads murray and quigg his luck changes
With their stable surely ****** would put their shows on boxnation,he shows maloneys david price shows because they get good ratings I know there is history between ricky and frank but remember frank is only a shareholder and richard poxon is hattons buisnessmind With frank cutting back on domestic shows it would give some much needed home content as well, with the hattons picking up part of the costs You have martin murray, scott quigg, gary buckland, anthony crolla, sergei rabchenko, jazza dickens, matty askin, steve foster jnr, richard towers, adam etches, scott jenkins, adam little some aussie lads including big daddy browne and some good kids.So much potential But the question is why havnt they already tied this up so there is obviously problems with any negotiation Then add hennessay got a channel 5 deal and maloney loaded tv without the stables that ricky has,so there could be other channels out there with no previous history in boxing or sport that would be interested Are the hattons pricing people out?
BoxNation will only show BIG domestic fights. Nothing small especially if there not with Frank. They just lose to much money from it. BoxNation are only interested in cheap cheap cheap international fights and big domestic names.
Unfortunately, Hatton is in an awkward spot like other promoters at the mo who can't readily access tv. To what extent he brought Sky's complete severing of ties on himself is open to debate. Personally, I think he was treated very harshly and there are those within Sky Sports who feel the same. Unfortunately they don't control the budget. Feel most sorry for Buckland right now. Murray had a tough overseas assignment yes but at least he fought! Although quite what Buckland's 10 rounder was supposed to have achieved if it had gone ahead is questionable anyway.
Does Price get good ratings no one actually knows. Funny how his promotor will look at going on to Loaded once contract over,.
Boxnation would be no good for Hattons fighters long term just like its no good for Franks. Boxnation are fantastic for international fights but for a fighter to become a name in this country you'd want sky or channel 5. I think part of hattons comeback was to broker a deal to get back on tv, if he'd have laboured to a win he'd have fought again but the primetime deal did **** all for him, he saw £ signs and took a short term fix. Its hard to believe he has options because surely he'd have took one by now.
I remember speak to Matthew Macklin about why he left Hatton Promotions. He said the problem was they didn't actually promote his fight. He could see a world of difference between the way Hattons operated compared to Frank. He was coming of the back of the Elcock win on ITV4, and they put his European title fight on in Manchester. I was there that night and there was no more than 750 in the place. Macklin told me he drove around Manchester to all the places where Frank used to put up posters and he couldn't find any, when he questioned Hatton Promotions on why he couldn't find any posters they told him they hadn't made any! That was Hattons Promotions problem. They didn't actually promote. Allot like the guys in the US, they were just matchmakers for Sky. They never built a following for a fighter, never made anybody into a star. If you look at the fighters they had they never capitalized on any momentum. Rendall Munroe was coming off the back of his world title fight where he put up a good show, he faced 3 journeyman in 2 years, never headlined a show before fighting Scott Quigg. Anthony Crolla beat John Watson for the British title in a great fight, he didn't defend his title for 8 months, when he did Hattons lost the purse bid. Martin Murray got a draw against Felix Sturm in Germany, he faced average international opponents for 18 months on undercards before going to Argentina. Denton Vassell beat Lee Purdy who went on to win the British title and have all these opportunies. After that fight it was a year before Vassell defended his Commonwealth title. He beat Bethel Ushona, one of the best Africans to fight over here for a long time. Ushona is now ranked No.4 by the WBO. Vassell went another 8 months before defending his title again. That defense got 120,000 viewers on Sky which was very very high for a Commonwealth title fight. Vassell went a another year without fighting. Scott Quigg stole the show at the MEN, 6 months later still doesn't have a date. Thats your 5 main fighters, horribly mis managed and promoted.
