The word is that Haymon had a different plan for Quillin and gave him $500K to let the belt and fight won by Rock Nation go. This has to be a huge loss for RN for paying that huge purse for nothing. Jay-Z has some less than Haymon type Yahoo running RN. Will they be able to out-think and out-position Haymon to get a toe into boxing promotion?
Well. :huh I really don't think they actually lost any money, after all, the fight didn't happen. I always assumed it was standard practice only to pay fighters who actually fight. At worst it was a moral loss for RN, but on the other hand the bid was so outlandish that it's kinda difficult to tell what their actual intent was. After all, if they were planning to make Haymon and Quillin look really bad then they succeeded admirably. If, OTOH their intention was to make a big start-up statement then... weeelllll.... not so much of a good job. I guess we'll just have to wait'n'see. I would have expected to hear something further out of RN following such an ostentatious opening, but so far... nada. Perhaps they're re-evaluating their strategy. I guess it's too early yet to tell.
Actually, I don't see it as Haymon having lost any face, but RN having wasted good time and money only to fail in their first attempt. Regardless of if the fight happened or not, RN spent time and money making the deal as well as possibly going thru the planning and venue selection. Probably a few hundred grand of effort with nothing to show for it.
