I'm calling for HBO to do the right thing and put this old dog down. He has completely lost his ability to call a fight and add ANY interesting comments. Hell, he doesn't even know who he is watching half the time and he completely disrupts the flow of the broadcast. I hate how he was constantly trying to counterpoint Emanuel Steward throughout the entire Donaire fight with complete nonsense. Does he have dirt on the one of the suits at HBO that keeps him in the game? Forget that I find him annoying as hell, he totally sucks at the job and is completely unprofessional. I know he's been there since 1978 but for God's sake, get him the hell out of there!!!! He also seems like a pompous douche and never gives respect to any of the fighters. A typical ****ing journalist that never had ANY skills to compete in any sports and now makes a living talking **** on the athletes with his BS elitist attitude. Hey HBO, your product sucks with this guy so do us all a favor, replace him!!!!!!
I like Merchant, he's good. Hope he does his thing till he feels he can't do anymore. A legend like that can't be fired.
They actually DID fire Merchant about 4 years ago, but the groundswell of sentiment for him was so great that they rehired him back to split the job with Kellerman. I don't know why so many people like him, but whatever. This last telecast had a couple of real bright spots when nobody said anything for about a minute and a half at a time.
I agree, he's losing a step or two, but he's not there to massage the fighters balls and make things peaches n cream for them. He gives fighters questions that put them on the spot and they have to answer too. That a fighter breaksdown midway through an interview and broken down mentally by 80 yr old Merchant that says more about the fighter not being able to cope with that. Not Merchant. Roy Jones knew how to handle Larry as did others. Ali had Cossell. Mayweather could turn Larry into a powerful ally from being a critic but Floyd doesnt have the wits of an Ali, Leonard, Roy Jones, etc Floyd thinks he does, but its just wishful thinking.
Larry Merchant is a legend who's forgotten more than we will ever know about boxing, in the public eye and behind the sceneds. he may have lost a step but he's still sharper and classier than anyone, I repeat, ANYONE, out there. people don't respect that he criticizes fighters and takes an incredulous stance on most up and coming fighters, but the man has seen enough fighters rise, fall, and never rise at all, and he's qualified as a result of that. Max Kellerman will one day get there but as of now he's still second fiddle.
He's good?? Really? At what? As a broadcaster he is terrible. Also, anyone can and should be fired when they do a bad job, Legend or not. I guess I'm missing his appeal. What does he offer that someone else couldn't? I'd be cool with a two man team and ditch the bloviating journalist angle all together... like ESPN on FNF.
He's trash. And he should definitely be put down. He ruins every telecast he's a part of in my eyes. I don't give a **** how much of a legend he is in some people's minds, he is too biased to be an effective announcer.
He's the best at AZZking tough questions. They shouldn't allow him to be commentating in fights involving guys he loves or hates imo.
