Will interest in May/Pac be RESTORED if Mayweather struggles against Cotto?

Much of the luster of a Mayweather/Pacquiao showdown was lost because of how much Pacquiao struggled against a JMM whom Mayweather beat with consummate ease. Most observers had JMM beating Pacquiao (I personally had it 116-112 Marquez).

There are many people who chalk it up to JMM just being the natural foil of Pacquiao, and warn us not to read too much into the implications for how Pacquiao would stack up against Mayweather.

So the question is, would some of that lost luster be restored if Mayweather ends up struggling mightily against a constantly pressuring Cotto and labours to a 115-113 decision? I envision a large number of people saying that Mayweather has trouble dealing with pressure fighters with an offensive style, the same way that people say Pacquiao has trouble dealing with slick counter-punchers with a defensive style. Would the mutual perception of each fighter facing their weakness actually be the best thing that could happen to help even out the odds once more in the mind of the public?

    Or...

would it actually have the opposite effect and cause the public to view both Mayweather and Pacquiao as spent forces, causing interest in the bout to plummet?

They've had near 4 years to get this fight on and it still has not happened.

I think we should just stop beating the dead horse.

For the casuals (90% of PPV buyers) they both need to look excellent.

    Both need to look good-

IF Floyd looked bad against Cotto, then I agree that it would probably bring a lil more public interest-

With that said, it would currently do more than 2.5 million buys so there still seems to be interest for it-Casual fan will still buy it.

IDK it depends. Either people will be excited that Floyd could now finally lose after 3 decades of dominance :yep
or they'll say the fight took too long to happen and now they're over the hill

When Pac beats Bradley to death that'll ignite it some more, and I imagine Floyd will have a tough one with Cotto.

Eitehr way this fight is way past it's due date , I don't really care that much anymore.

I just hope they both die, so we can stop talking about them.

My view is that Mayweather struggling a bit could actually help the interest if Manny looks good and people think they might finally see Floyd KTFO.

It's Manny's performance that will really move interest. Bradley will be tough to look good against and two sub-sensational performances in a row could lead people to write Pac's chances against Mayweather off.

I think if Mayweather struggles with Cotto and Pac looks good against Bradley it will restore a lot of interest. I think a lot of the people who don't really want the fight much anymore are people rooting for Pacquiao. Majority of Mayweather's fans see the result of the fight now the same as they did when it was first announced, in my opinion.. And I don't think majority of Floyd's fans feel Pacquaio has slowed tremendously.. Just didn't have the same stylistic match-ups the past few fights. They both have slowed, but not enough to say the fight shouldn't happen.

If they both struggle in their next fights, it will hurt interest obviously.

Who has Mayweather ever struggled with past round 3-4?

The only person who's interest needs to be piqued is Pac's. He is scared out of his mind. No way the fight happens.
