There are alot of young, deserving new ames above him in the rankings . . . . so most probably not. He's got to earn his way back into the rankings to get one.
What's really funny is that people actually reply to these threads and take them seriously, without even noticing. It's a shame sarcasm doesn't go across on this thing.
Beating Peter in the rematch would have helped him backup his claim. He is a good fighter and great defensively, but most top heavyweights who are champs will beat him by decision. He is entertaining to listen to, but at heavyweight he comes up short at the top. Even when he fought lower weights, he came up short when he fought the really top guys like Jones.
James still has the skills to compete with the top heavyweights today (except maybe the Klits). James Toney would fight everyone but his statement that "everybody seems to duck me" is not true. His promoter Dan Goossem has to be blamed. Quizeda and Oquendo called James Toney on numerous occasions. Goosens also has top fighters like Thompson and Arreola under contract. I am sure there must be other fighters who are willing to fight him even if they are not big names. James Toney should retire now.
What I really like about toney is he seems to genuinely love the sport... I would really like to see him get a legit title shot one more time....against a haye, chagaev.... I would really love to see a povetkin-toney fight...it intrigues me....
I would love to see Toney get one more big fight before he retires, after all he's a legend and he can't just disappear like that, but I've given up hope that it will happen. At age 41, Toney needs to stay active, but he just isn't fighting - not even journeymen. It has been nearly three months since he went barely 2 rounds with Matthew Greer - an absolute tomato can - and this was supposed to be a stay busy fight before bigger and better things. Nothing has happened since. The man is just too inactive, and that's mainly his promoter Dan Goossens fault. Manuel Quezada wanted to fight him in december, it'd have been a good crossroads fight, but Dan Goossen (who promotes both men) didn't want it.. James needs some good performances before he can get a big fight. The problem why no one of the top fighters wants to fiace Toney is simple - he remains a big question mark. Is he really that shot? While he's a legend and still a good win on anybodys record (a stoppage win over Toney would be something extraordinary), he's also considered an old fat shot MW at this point. On the other hand, he's reportedly in good shape and he might still have one last good fight in him - imagine if he scored an upset win against Haye or Chagaev? Or if he loses but makes them look bad. High risk, no reward. At the end of the day, Toney needs to work his way back to the top in order to get another big fight, maybe even a title-fight - and he has to look good doing so. If he has to beat C- and B-level fighters to achieve that, then so be it - it's the same route most other HWs take. But since he's basically not doing anything now that he is in decent shape for once, after long periods of inactivity, I think he should just retire.
I think Toney is done. Why did he waste the whole year 2009 by only making one single fight. Toney is getting older and older and still no good fight is being made for him. He is done:|
Dan Goossen could have made something happen if he only wanted. B-Level fighters like Oquendo and Quizeda called him out. Goossen has A-Level fighters like Arreola and Thompson under contract which he could easily match with Toney. Goossen does not want to do it. Fighting C-Level fighters would have been another option which is less attractive but nevertheless Toney would stay active and keep his ranking. I am sure a lot of C-level fighters would fight Toney because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Goossen does not want to do it. So, that leaves retirement for Toney. And quite frankly, I am tired of Toney's delusional interview where he wants to fight the Klits and Haye. He won't get a title shot, end of story.
I see it like you, Goossen does not want to risk his younger fighters like Quezada, Arreola or even Malik Scott and Tony Thompson against Toney. Toney might still score an upset and derail their careers. That's why Toney has been put on the shelf for now, and at age 41 that's fatal. It's a tragedy because Toney finally is in good shape after all these years.. maybe he shouldn't have returned to Dan Goossen after all. Don King would have been a good option, he's a criminal but at least he still manages to give his old HWs some fights - but we all know that James Toney can't stand Don King and won't work with him. Dan Goossen should remember who saved his company 5-6 years ago, when his only successfull fighter was James Toney. Nobody gave a damn about Goossen then, but Toney brought him back to the spotlight. Now Goossen has new young stars like Paul Williams, Chris Arreola, Andre Ward, Eddie Chambers, and while I agree that he should focus on them (after all they bring in the cash), he shouldn't forget about his other fighters, and especially not about good old James Toney.
Toney doesn't deserve a big fight. He doesn't have a single meaningful win on his record in the last 6 years. Greer: lol Oquendo: He lost that fight. Rahman: NC + Draw Batchelder: lol Peter: Lost x2 Guinn: lol Ruiz: Busted for steroid Booker: lol Holyfield: Decent I guess even tho Holyfield was already shot. Jirov: His last legitimate win...back in 2003 Why should Toney get a title shot again? :rofl
