for Toney, Chambers would be all wrong at this point. Chambers is young and fast and keeps on the outside. This would be a snoozefest ending in a decision win for Chambers. I'd rather see Toney against Chris Arreola, Brian Minto or Ruslan Chagaev.
I agree that Toney doesn't deserve a big fight at this point. I also agree that his run at HW has been somewhat of a roller coaster and disappointing. The official results do not always reflect reality though. We all saw that he did beat Sam Peter in the first fight. And got robbed. That is not even debatable. He arguably did better against Peter (in the first fight) than Wladimir Klitschko did. The Rahman rematch should've been a TKO win for Toney, because Rahman quit. I know this topic has been discussed to death here already, but the general consensus was that Rahman wanted a way out and found a way to get the NC. Toney-Oquendo could've gone either way. If you had Oquendo winning, that's ok. I had Toney winning by 1 point. Definitely a controversial outcome, but not a robbery. Toney-Ruiz was rightfully ruled a NC. Still, we all saw Toney whopping Ruiz' ass badly (only David Tua has done better against Ruiz) - and that wasn't because of the steroids, it was because of Toneys skills.
Toney won't get a shot for the reasons stated by Frost and it is obvious that Toney does not deserve a shot. Just for your information: You can pick apart anybody's resume. For example, who have Arreola and Kevin Johnson ever beaten? What has Ruiz done in the last 5 years? Fact is, Toney had some nice outings as a heavyweight (Peter I, Ruiz, Rahman II) and some legimate wins or results (Holyfield, Guinn, Oquendo,Rahman (draw)). That is not too bad for a former middleweight.
You are right there but as you commented earlier those fight won't happen: Arreola: Goossen won't let him fight Toney. Minto:This guy wants no part of James. Chagaev:He is afraid he might lose against James.Reward/Risk ratio is too low.
Toney is finished, mainly due to the inability of his promoter to put together a comprehensive comeback plan. Like other posters already mentionned there would have been various ways to put Toney back into title contention but his promoter wants none of it... Hell, Gossen even secured Tony Thompson a somewhat meaningful fight against Witherspoon on the undercard of Williams vs. Martinez... As it is too late for the 41 year old Toney to switch promoters, he should simply call it a day and enjoy retirement.
