Is Joe's legacy in jeopardy, a bit anyway, now that he has declared that he wants to have one more fight, and that it be against Roy Jones Jr. His four biggest wins are against: (1) Chris Eubank (2) Jeff Lacy (3) Mikkel Kessler (4) Bernard Hopkins People could throw tags onto these wins (I don't by the way): (1) Past his best (2) A hyped-up-nobody (although Lacy has had bad injury problems which have hampered him in a return to good form) (3) Unproven at top level (4) Past his best Roy Jones is obviously not the fighter he was; I think we can all agree with that. So will Joe have to rely upon what Kessler does in the rest of his career to decide if he will rise or fall in All-Time P4P stakes. Of course I do realise that things can change, and that Joe may end up fighting Pavlik (a more live target), but as things stand at the moment (what with the comments 2nite) does Joe rely on Kessler to a large extent? I'm not having a go at Joe's HOF credentials (he is in there), but does his stock fall (overall) in comparison with how Kessler fares?
Not entirely but people will realise just how good Calzaghe was when Kessler goes on to unify 168 and most probably do the same at 175 as well. Kessler is an excellent fighter and has a great personality to go with it. Fighting and beating a past it but still capable Jones instead of Pavlik will affect his legacy slightly though in my opinion even though some people forget that Calzaghe is at least 3 years past his prime now. Calzaghe will be more appreciated in years to come than he is now.
My view: 1) No good. Eubank was past his best 2) Pretty good. I don't take any credit from Calzaghe because Lacy has looked crap since. 3) Very good. Going into the fight Kessler had proved that he was much better than Lacy. 4) Very close fight. I thought he lost. With Hopkins being well past his best I don't think this is a great win.
I didn't realise that you had done this before. Sorry for raining on your parade Joe:good But, lets get some fresh perspective post-interview.
Not exactly. I mean how many convenient excuses can there be for each opponent when a man is 45-0 with a solid resume? There is more spin than a washing machine on here. That said, of course it will make a difference. Kessler is one of his best wins, because he is a good fighter, and he'll prove it.
