    Hey guys,

I was just wondering your thoughts about Joe Mesi and whether he'll fight again. If he never fights again, his career will go down as one of the most bizarre ones of all time. To be undefeated and ranked the #1 heavyweight and then in victory to suffer a brain contusion, fight and win a 2 year legal battle to get his license reinstated, reel off another 7 wins and then quit boxing to run for Senate, lose and never fight again. That would be insane!! After all those fights (amateur and professional) and to be 36-0 and not even fight for a world title after having the fan support that he has would be silly. Agree or disagree?

I have a feeling that Joe feels as if he Prime was ruined by the NSAC suspending him and forcing him to spend his prime in litigation. I think that he doesn't feel at this age that he will be able to come back and perform at the top of his game and probably doesn't want to risk putting a negative mark on that undefeated record.

It's sad because he really was a good fighter and his fights were a blast to watch. I actually thought that he looked very good and close to being back to his old form when he knocked out Linberger. However, he did suffer a back injury which he aggravated later in the same year... and then turned around to tear his rotator cuff in this shoulder while training for his next fight. It's possible that the injuries just mounted up on him... probably forced him out of training as well... his weight gets out of control... more time away from the ring... getting older... ect... Everything may have just piled up and made his decision for him.

I don't think he was really much interested in the spotlight. He is an extremely intelligent and articulate guy. He got the exposure, he needed from boxing. Now he will move on to bigger and better things. A brain is a terrible thing to waste.

I was sad to see him retire , but also glad that he was able to retire with his health. I doubt that he returns , considering his current age and inactivity level.

He was a good fighter. Not champion level, but He gave his all in every fight and was very well rounded in his skills.

After the brain injury, and not fighting for 2 years, he did improve actually and he was close to looking like his old self, but as was said, he had mounting injuries, had to take more time off.

He is a smart and well spoken fellow, he has options outside of boxing. He can say he fought at the world level, was undefeated, was a warrior. He may be satisfied with that

Before his injury he had the potential to be a beltholder, but he's a smart man who could get an ESPN job for sure.

It looks like hes more into politics these days although I would love to see him fight again if he somehow got back to his top form (pre-jirov)

mesi was only a fringe contender in a bad era who had mixed success with other fringe hw's like barrett and jirov (who really only fought at hw once). hope he's moved on from boxing

Though I come to grips with reality, after Mesi was decked by Guinn and Jirov, realizing he'd never take on a Lewis, Tyson or even Holyfield, let alone Klitschko's, he was ALWAYS an exciting heavyweight to watch. I liked him, but I think even the Marciano brothers were joking when they said he reminded them of Rocky...more like one of The Brockton Blockbuster's opponents!

With that being said, a return to the ring for Mesi wouldn't be a bad one. I'd love to see him face Brian Minto, but I'd be afraid Baby Joe would end up with a stroke like Axl Schulz following the fight.

Well, Mesi never fought Guinn. You must be thinking of Barrett. On Mesi's behalf... I would like to remind people that Mesi shouldn't even have been fighting that night. A car door split his eye open and he had stitches which prevented him from sparring. He came into the fight overweight and out of shape. He pushed through and won the fight.

Against Jirov, he was beating the ever-loving **** out of Jirov until that horrible punch to the back of the head towards the end of the 9th round that changed his life and career forever. Jirov was on the verge of being stopped the round before, and ONLY found success against Joe after he had suffered the injury from the blow to the back of the head. Mesi admitted later that he doesn't even remember the 10th round. Once again... he still showed great heart, pushed through and won the fight.

Very good points guys. I guess I just thought it would be nice to see him at least fight for a title after all he's been through.
