Will Jones/Hopkins/Kessler's careers go on to define Calzaghe's?

good post. rjj looked somewhat average vs calzaghe primarily b/c of the mental aspects. if roy goes on to have some more success it shouldn't "define" calzaghe by any stretch of the imagination though it might make calzaghe's win "look better" than it actually was. the funny thing is that even though much of what you wrote about rjj/calzaghe i agree with, jones still made the fight fairly competiive for a while before the cut

 

Why would his career need defining by a 40 year old man if he already achieved ATG status?

Ask yourselves that.

 

Then the question probably wasn't addressing you my friend. Im talking about the droves of rabid Calzaghe fans and countrymen who think he's one of the greatest of all time. They use ridiculous rationale to justify their outrageous claims, in your time here im sure you've seen them.

Really though, how great can a fighter be if his entire legacy depends on how the career's of three other fighters go?

Calzaghe can beat Jones 10 out of 10 times, that will still not put him in the same light of Jones ... first of all Jones fought a better quality of opposition, started off at a lighter weight class, and won a heavyweight title (bypassing cruiserweight) ... those are some accomplishments that Calzaghe will never be able to accomplish ... I repeat no matter what the head to head match up was (not to mention Jones being a fresh 40 yrs old) Calzaghe will never be able to reach Jones' level.

 

Jones beating Lacy so bad puts yet another dent in Calzaghe's record. Soon it'll come down to whether Kessler actually turns out to be all that good, something which is yet to be totally proven.
Calzaghe's own fault for spending so many years defending the WBO belt against nobodies.

If Roy's problems were mental, then shame on him. It is Calzaghe who has had...how many hand breakages, affecting his ability to punch with impunity? I would put Jones ahead of Calzaghe in history, but if I felt this were true, I would have to reverse that order.

And as another poster pointed out: now he has his confidence back? How? Why?

The truth of the Jones Calzaghe fights is that two great but faded warriors matched up, and Calzaghe had a little more left in the tank. Period.
