yeah if roy can jus beat Mikkel Kessler, Sakio Bika, and Peter Manfredo then Calzaghe's atg ranking puts him in the top 50.......:roll::roll:

Kessler holds the torch to JC's legacy, Roy has nothing to do with it.

    good post.
but i'm hoping you didnt mean that jones and hopkins were high risk, low reward for calzaghe....

calzaghe was definitely an excellent fighter, but beating jones or hopkins, even though they werent ppv fighters wouldnt have mattered a thing because it would instantly have given calzaghe NOTORIETY.

calzaghe had everything to gain from fighting these guys in their prime. i mean everything.

No because Roy Jones is still a shot fighter who if pitched against any world class opponent at this point in his career will get brutally stopped.

Beating Lacy does nothing for Calzaghe legacy. Lacy is not even on the same level as Calzaghe, if anything it just shows how limited Lacy actually is.

However beating Hopkins does everything for Calzaghe Legacy. Hopkins may not be the fighter he was, but believe me he is far from shot.

    i agree and disagree.

calzaghe beating lacy the way he did made people stand up and take notice. lacy has fallen short since but, to date, lacy and kessler were the most dangerous 'prime' challengers to calzaghe and he showed his skills both times.

the hopkins win was arguably his best but only because of the fighter hopkins is, but how can you take seriously a fighter who tries to call himself "great" and a "legend" openly only after fighting faded greats he should have fought in his prime ?

God I hate patronising people, if you read my posts you would see I dont rate Calzaghe an ATG . I was asking others opinions. It's got nothing to do with who Roy beats, the point is if Jones carries on to perform well he may have been a decent fighter still when Calzaghe beat him (Im not saying its true its just a point of view), same for the other two. Thanks for the reply though. Generally I agree about Kessler, if he wins the super six and performs well in big fights after that Calzaghe has a prime HOFer on his resume.

Remeber we have to be fair, it was Hopkins who priced himself out of the fight. Doesnt excuse calz fully tho but in that instance atleast he did try to fight hopkins in his prime.

but my point is that if calzaghe had made a name for himself in the US this fight would have happened easily.

if you want to be "fair" you have to remember what i said about making yourself marketable internationally.

the germans might tell you that felix sturm is the next coming....but which top class fighters who are established do you think will give him a shot even if he brings extra cash while he keeps fighting in germany?

none of them. because its bad business with too much at stake.

you earn these types of fights, or else you get lucky with them like froch did against taylor - and he made the most of it.

I see your point but a lot of it is ethnocentric ego. They probally dont realise that rest of world doesnt view them as elite like their own countrys do. Just foolish pride and an inability to see the greater picture and plan ahead, something fighters like Froch atleast seem to understand

you post some good stuff but you got to get this "us versus them" mentality out of your system.

i know you're keen to back your homegrown fighters but i'm being as objective as i can to show you why what you're saying doesnt work.

Oh i dont have the mentality myself im just trying to speak from how i think calz sees things. for me i dont really care where a fighter comes from or the colour of skin or religion ect ect. I do see alot of it in others tho and its from thier viewpoint i try to see things at times. Its often the us vs them diehard fans that fuel fighters egos and help them to beleive they are top dogs. As i said for a good example of how i think a fighter should act we only have to look at froch. He removed the us vs them thing right away and showed he was willing to be an international name and not just a national champion.

froch only got the taylor fight because taylor thought that he could beat froch comfortably and use his belt as leverage to build his career.

froch made the most of it. he was always 'willing' to fight bigger fighters, just like juniour witter was. but if taylor didnt come along froch could easily have spent his career with a chip on his shoulder about calzaghe just like witter did about hatton - and nothing would have changed unless they made the moves hatton did to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.

make no mistake, froch got an early christmas present by getting offered the taylor fight.

Well, after you put Kessler and Hopkins in. Kessler can yes! Hopkins guess not, in that case he already did it with Pavlik! but i`ve not yet seen anyone change opinion on Calz
