I think the public will get behind Lomas style. Just takes a little time to build a solid following sometimes. Golovkins case is interesting.... he had as much going for him as he had against him I think, his style, his sayings ('good boy' 'big drama show' 'mexican style', ect) his KO streak, certain in ring moments (absorbing Geales punch with his eyes open while simultaneously knocking him down, giving curtis stevens the FML face, ect) the gym stories so many pros had about how mythic he was, ect, ect, ect.... all combined in a somewhat unique way to create a cult following that helped propel him to the upper tiers of popularity in boxing (though like I said, I do think its debatable that he has, even now, truly transcended the sport).... but his age and lack of big fights (and now that he has had two big 'breakout' type fights, in canelo and jacobs, he failed to put in star making performances) will keep him from being the star he could have been. Loma is certainly not a spring chicken, and it will be very interesting to see how effective he is as his lethal athleticism begins to fade, but.... he still has the time and the style to become a star I think, all he will need are the opponents. I hear there is actually consideration of him fighting Pac at 135.... and if Arum doesnt sink a Garcia fight, those are two fights right there that can put him where G is at right now if not above, just imo. anyways, i look forward to seeing how his career plays out thats for sure.
Yes he will, he won’t be on Floyd’s level or Manny as far as stardom. But he will definitely pass GGG. My reasoning is three things. He showboats people like that. His style is fantastic from a fan point of view due to him always throwing. He’s the guy everyone is talking about they want him to fight Crawford, Garcia, Linares etc etc. public is currently asking who can dethrone him. Give him 3 more fights barring a loss and he keeps fighting at the high level he’s at. 2019 is his year
He's a better boxing talent than GGG but he'll never surpass his stardom. Middleweight is a glorious division (in ways that anything below 147lbs never will be), and GGG is a knockout artist. There's nothing to bring in the masses like a lethal punching lineal MW champion with 20 defenses.
The problem with these Eastern European fighters is they take too long to get going professionally. They're not American and they don't usually speak English well. Which makes them a harder sell. They spend their prime building their name and only "cash in" so to speak after they are already on the slide. You see guys like GGG who by the time he built up a following and fan base his body was already telling him no. Loma won 2 Olympic gold medals. The 2nd one is completely unnecessary. He's gaining traction, but he turns 30 in 2 months. For a fighter of his style he's got like 2-3 years left at his best. So essentially by the time he's a "star" he won't be able to do what he used to do.
I don't know about that. Middleweight is a marquee weight class, but Golovkin isn't a huge star among the biggest the sport has ever seen. I think Lomachenko's style can potentially get him closer to that type of benchmark than Golovkin's ever reached - for many of the reasons @inner2deepz mentioned. But I guess we'll know in time.
No, Loma is already among the best fighters of all time, but he is only popular among the hardcore boxing fans. Sounds stupid, but GGG has 5 times more followers on social media. Loma will never fight in PPV, and maybe he made 1.2 million last Saturday, but Golovkin has already made 40+ M during his career. Also, Golovkin has his own Jordan brand, Tecate, Hublot and loads of other sponsors. Not talking about that even if he is eastern european, he has quite big mexican fan base. Crawford, ES Jr, Thurman, Loma etc. hell of a fighters, but people from the streets don't know them.
I don't especially like when fighters showboat. But there is an appeal that's beneficially divisive, where it results in an increase of both supporters and detractors. And showmanship does play a big role in boxing, so if it works for someone, and is either improving his marketability and/or giving him a psychological advantage over an opponent, who am I to tell him that I don't especially like showboating.
I don't mind showboating if its to play mind games mid-fight in a close contest, when one of the guys is clearly over matched and is being embarrassed like that it turns me off Loma, as a fan.
