Margo's uppercuts are pretty good. I'd say his best punches along with his right cross. That being said I don't think Manny will let Margo hit him with those, though Cotto and Clottey were able to land a couple of solid uppercuts.
Manny seems to have zero uppercut defense. He may have been okay with taking the 6 or so that Clottey threw, but if I was Freddie, I would tell him to stay the **** away from them.
This is my thought as well -- both cotto and clottey snapped Pac's head back when he was in the peekaboo defense he uses. It would not be prudent for him to sit around on the ropes and let Margo hit him with too many of those -- plaster or no plaster.
If there was one punch that Margarito threw against Garcia that i didn't think lost a bit of umph during his year and a bit out, it was that left uppercut. If it lands flush even a few times against Pacquiao, he's in the fight.
I don't think Manny Pacquiao will look to get as close to Antonio Margarito as he did with both Cotto and Clottey. Considering Margarito typically has to set himself before unleashing shots, as he had trouble doing against Shane Mosley, I don't envision him landing to many uppercuts on Manny Pacquiao. That's if Pacquiao employs the right strategy, and moves laterally on the outside. He's more than quick enough to dart in and out to mount his own offense, without Margarito having the time to be throwing uppercuts, etc. It's counter-productive for Manny Pacquiao to stand stationary in a peek-a-boo defensive shell because Margarito will already be open to clean shots.
I don't see Manny knocking Margarito out using this method, and Roach made it clear that was what they were planning on doing.
Don't put to much stock in what Roach has been saying. That said, I believe Pacquiao will start out fighting on the outside and moving a lot, but if he begins to sense that Margarito is weakening, then he may open up more and start standing in the pocket, by this time the uppercuts would have less snap than usual, and therefore failing to be too much of a factor to decide the outcome. This is just speculation, but if Manny Pacquiao comes out standing toe to toe with Margarito, he's making a potentially easy night very hard.
Well said. But I think a lot depends on Margo's approach aswell as Manny's. He could come out like his old self, abandoning defence and throwing lot's of punches to wear down his opponent. Or he could come out like Robert Garcia said he might - trying to box Pacquiao from a distance and using his height and reach to his advantage. It will be interesting to see what Manny does to deal with Margo's style.
If Pacquiao gets caught up in trying to stop Margarito, yes, he'll eat lots of them. Toe to toe, Pacquiao is not Mosley, he lacks the physical strength. He'll take alot of damage en route to a points win if he fights that way. With movement and boxing, angles and speed, he can break down Margarito easily. The thing that I find interesting going into this fight is how much time Pacquiao spent in front of Cotto and Clottey, and even Hatton. Margarito would not be the opponent to do this with.
no because he's not the same really good athlete he once was (cintron 1 and the hercules kyvelos fights come to mind)
as freddie said, speed is the key. pac has to get the hell out of margo's uppers, or pac gets the crossed-eye glance in more than a decade. pac spitting blood in-between rounds would mean those uppercuts are well damn nasty!
