DLH is still active and still has his detractors. When Oscar disappears from the scene will we see a nostalgia build up and will we see Oscar rise in the rankings? To anyone that says Oscar has lost all his big fights ignores the fact that that every fight the guy fought since he won Olympic gold were big names and big fights. If Trinidad was a big fight then what the hell was Carr, Quartey, Whitaker, and JCC before that? -and let's not even bring up his years as a sledgehammer at Lightweight. It's absurd. The thing is I already miss Oscar and Tito, when they were most active. That type of ferocity comes every once in a while in a boxer. As a fan of the man since I watched the 1992 olympics picture the power and speed of Pacquiou with the boxing ability of Marquez and you get the idea.
That's my point, every fight the guy ever fought was a big win. Mayorga held the belt, remember? He knocked out an incredible boxer in Vernon forest twice . Mosley is ranked higher than DLH with lots more big losses than DLH has, owing to the fact that Mosley's whole reputation is based off of two DLH wins. Vargas does not count as Tito and DLH had shattered him by the time Mosley fought him.
I agree Whitaker was big fight, but calling it Oscar's win is an overstatement. The "credit" should go rather to Chuck Giampa (115-111), Jerry Roth (116-110) and Dalby Shirley (116-110).
i just cant get over those decisions, but lets not forget the call in oscars favour against felix sturm. i think he will be a atg depending on what 2008 holds for him.
Everyone is so hung up on this. Jerry Roth gave oscar's rounds to trinidad and scored for mayweather as well. If you are going to disagree with Oscar's controversial wins then you should do so with his controversial losses as well; ie, Trinidad and Mayweather. He beat Whitaker because Whitaker slept through the match in much the same well DLH did against Floyd. In a few years you will see every jackass say that Mosley beat Cotto and the judges slighted him.
Chavez was only 36 when they fought for the second time. If Kessler had beaten Calzaghe would he then be "the one who struggled briefly with an old past-his-prime Calzaghe"? Boxers don't lose all their skills when they turn 32, but many fans seem to think so and give no credit for wins over "old" fighters.
He will always be rememeberd for the guy who got boxing back on its feet with his great matchs he has presented and particpated in
No an ATG - but a damn good fighter, who generated millions in this game. One of the biggest attractions in the sport ever is not an ATG.
I'll personally remember him as a top 50 ATG, he's in my list at 49, but hey, thats just my opinion, he was superb in his prime.
It truly amazes me that "The Ring" has him as a future candidate for ATG right behind top 20 welters in the February issue and still emphasizes how much the mag is not influenced by the new owner.
Right, because no one felt that Whitaker won at the time of the fight - other than over half the scribes that covered the fight :good
