I remember back in the day everyone was suspect about Cotto's chin from his fights at 140. Ever since the Margo loaded with cedar blocks it has been no more. I think he will get wobbled though, its the punches you dont see that hurt.

Fair point, but Pacquiao didn't seem to sit down on his punches against De La Hoya to begin with. That's not to say that he would against Cotto - if he wasn't against De La Hoya.. I think Freddie Roach has some very difficult tactical instructions to empart to Pacquiao.

Does anyone think Manny should sit down more, even if that leaves him in range longer?

I don't think theres any doubt that the shot that put Hatton's lights out would hurt most guys in the fight business. Whether he will take the risk to tee off with shots with such a high rate of risk is another story though, and Cotto certainly won't be running onto them.

I certainly wouldn't expect an actual stoppage from a single blow though, or even a KD. Manny's chance of stopping Cotto lies in relentlessly throwing shots up the middle, particularly his weird straight/uppercut kind of hybrid punch he throws. Cotto didn't show any improvements to his defense against shots up the middle after it was obviously exposed by Margarito, which is a big worry about his corner. It has probably actually gotten worse, as he doesn't seem to use a Mayweather style half-guard much at all anymore (he used it a bit in the Mosley fight and it definitely seals up his defense up the middle a little bit).

Manny will have to break Cotto down to stop him.

I think he'll fight more like he did against De La Hoya, at least to begin with. I think he'll be buzzing around like that and point scoring while also trying to break Cotto's resistance. Then he might try to sit down.

Cotto hasn't seemed to take high speed, snapping shots all that well at any weight. Have a look at Cotto/Judah (147). I can't compare the kind of punching Margarito does to the kind of punching Pacquiao does, which is part of the basis for this exploration.

I don't believe cotto has great one punch power. Can he hurt pac? Yes. Can he hurt pac with one single shot? I don't think so.

It should be a very interesting tactical battle early on, with a good level of intensity.

If Pac will land something more devastating than the one that puts Hatton to wonderland, then yes, I believe he will be able to hurt cotto or possibly knocks him out. Although Cotto ain't no Hatton when it comes to chin, but that shot seems so powerful that when it lands perfectly, could knock anybody out.

Cotto won't be in that position for a punch like that. Look at how Hatton commited himself in that exchange, its not something you would ever see out of Cotto. Well, I'd be hugely surprised. Pac will have to find the punches himself, Cotto isn't going to put his chin out to dry for him.

Put it this way, if he can't Pac is dead meat, because Cotto will eat him.

I think he must have close to KO power at WW, given the fact that Hatton, a guy I thought had decent durability, was KOed cold. For Hatton, this may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, having been in many wars, but Pac must have decent power at JWW regardless.

Will this be enough to keep Cotto off him? Cotto fought Riccardo Torres who I would hazard a guess hits harder than Pac. He was wobbled early but came back and broke Torres down. If he can withstand the onslaught, I think Cotto will break Pac down.
