look back and remember cotto, and as what? clearly he'll be a HOF bur realistically how far out your top 100ATG would you place him?
I'll remember him as someone who always gave it his all even if he came short in some of his big fights
I really doubt Cotto is in the top 100 of boxers that ever lived. I like watching him fight, but boxing is a sport with a strong history.
agree brownies, i never said he'd be in the atg's i said how far outside the top 100 would he sit... thanks
Warrior, underrated, underappreciated skills, elite fighter across three divisions, just couldn't beat the very best of his generation, which is no shame when those guys are certain future high-level ATGs in Pacquiao and Mayweather.
one of puerto rico's great champions and a ring gladiator who gave the boxing fans numerous compelling bouts on every stage, a family man and tremendous fighter who transformed from a relentless, stalking bodyshot master, to a sound boxer-puncher, and win lose or draw created compelling action up until the very last bell.
Ah ok, it would be hard to say. He's in the category of really good boxers who's constently been one of the top boxers in their weight class, over a large part of their career, but never THE best around. In the last 10 years, while he's been a step back behind the Mayweathers and Pacquiao of this world : The Klitschkos have been on top of the HW division. Hopkins got some great wins from MW to LHW Calzhaghe stayed undefeated at SMW and LHW until the end of his career Juan Manuel Marquez had a great career from FW to WW Barrera and Morales have cemented their ATG career with some good wins. Wonjongkam dominated the flyweight scene for many years Ivan Calderon dominated the minimumweight limit for much of the decade And I'm probably forgetting some guys... So I find it hard to rank a guy who never dominated his weightclass above guys who did. Only in this era, I'd rank at least 10 guys in front of him. His career also overlapped with older guys I'd also rank way higher like Toney, De la Hoya, Holyfield, Jones Jr. There are also guys like Williams, Mijares, R. Marquez, I. Vasquez, Gamboa and Donaire who'd probably rank near Cotto. So, I think he's been a top 20 fighter in the last decade. With over 110 years of boxing, that would put him in the top 220 fighter. It's the fastest answer I can give you haha. Edit : I forgot Chris John, who I'd also rank higher.
Coto has a very loyal fanbase. I think he will be remembered well in 10 years. Not as the best fighter of his era, but as a fighter who went into memorable battles.
Absolutely, Cotto will be remembered as a Warrior. IMO, he will also be ranked higher in his country's history of great fighters. (But only post retirement)
