Groves is a very very slick and awkward boxer, with a very good jab and can punch and he was far too clever for Eubank tonight. Eubank and his team spent 12 rounds tryna figure out how to deal with him, and probably still don’t know Groves used his boxing ability to negate Eubanks biggest skill, his speed. Doesn’t matter how fast you punch if you can’t touch a man.. left Eubank swinging wildly and off balance far too many times and dealt with his pressure on the ropes well making Eubank miss a lot and then clinching to get back to his boxing
I've always loved his style. Lacy'd CEJ a bit there.. Commanding career defining win in some ways. Happy for him. He's always been a talent & a cool lad. No shame in losing to Froch & that first one will always have an asterisk attached. Peeps forget he was his own promoter back then too!! Plus it was pre McGuigan who is a good for for him. CEJ, Chudinov, Degale, an away loss SD to Jack & a brilliant losing* performance to Froch is not a career to be sniffed at. I think he beats Smith too. These tournaments have delivered! CEJ will come again at MW or Degale, Truax at SMW etc but hell always lose to boxers! I'd love Groves v BJS next year! Groves can rightly sit as the top table of Brit SMW boxers now alongside JC, Froch, Eubank, Benn, Degale etc....
I dont know much of Groves and have seen very little of him but gotta admit, I definitely underestimated the man. Cool to see him pick the win! Well deserved.
Groves v BJS.. real technical fight can see it being a real chess match whilst they try figure each other out But I agree, can’t believe how hyped up Eubank got. Power of social media!
He deserves big credit there. Almost shut CEJ out. Only lost 2 rounds on my card, and one of those was because his shoulder popped out in the 12th. Showed he was levels above CEJ, as he predicted pre fight. Lets face it everyone under estimated him in this fight. We all got caught by the CEJ hype train to some extent. Even though when this tournament started I predicted he would win it. I was still sold by the hype of CEJ and changed my mind to pick CEJ to win this on points before the fight was made.
He was a good amateur and has been in and around world level for years, I couldn’t believe how much he was being overlooked. People almost turned his experience at world level into a negative!
I stayed off the hype train, partly cos he really irritates me, but I was sort of worried that Eubank would come out throwing plenty of shots and maybe just out work Groves. But he didn’t have the ability to actually close the range and work, couldn’t get into a rhythm which made it very controllable for Groves
Like most boxers Groves has his strengths and his weaknesses. The problem was people over stating Groves weaknesses (his chin and stamina aren't that bad) and obviously some people got a bit carried away by Eubank Jr beating limited opposition. Level of opposition matters.
Groves did well but Eubank was begging to be finished in the late rounds and George couldn't do it. he still looks to be missing something from the truly elite level, whether it be stamina and/or a killer instinct.
Groves isn't too far off retirement... I'm happy for the dude. Froch fights could have pushed him over the edge. He deserves everything that comes to him. He can retire in peace now.
People have been saying he's lost something for a while and I didn't see it myself. I thought it was just the fact that he was fighting better opposition. Now however I'm starting to think he may be lacking a little bit of killer instinct. Maybe I'm wrong though. Maybe it was part of the game plan to just out box Jr, be cautious and not take too many chances. He finished Cox and let some big bombs off against Chudinov (when he was under pressure though). I guess we'll see in the future.
Yeah, good post, this Groves chin and stamina thing was overplayed and I believe Jr himself bought it to it too. People seemed to forget Jr wasn't a huge puncher at Middleweight, he wasn't one punch KO'ing fighters but the way people spoke you'd think he was. Groves finished OK against Badou Jack. He wasn't falling all over the place or hanging on. Groves has been on the floor against Froch (Froch said it was the best right hand he ever threw) and against Jack, he was caught cold and got up and went the distance. The way some people were talking you'd think Groves was competing with Khan for the British Glass title. Also the weight, I still insist it was a big advantage to Groves, tonight he wasn't bullied, pulled around or heavily leaned on, if they did get close Groves tied Jr up, almost completely nullified the Jr uppercut and inside work and just leant on him, pulled him around and it tired Jr. Jr just didn't do enough early to take much out of Groves, either he felt power and didn't want to get that close early or he froze again like he did against BJS, either way after 6 rounds Groves was relatively fresh and by the end Jr looked just as tired as Groves.
