Pirog (or Titov and Pelullo) appear unwilling to forgo his million dollar paydays fighting undersized guys in Russia and try to build his name in the US if it's not on HBO or Showtime. Golovkin spent years mired in obscurity thanks to a promotional situation that was partly his own making. Even now, despite a photoshoot in New York, he and K2 appear more interested in continuing to wait for a Sturm fight than they are in doing anything noteworthy. Of course neither guy is interested in fighting the other as well. There's an excessive amount of tears being shed for both in my opinion.
Ya man true on barker, that was probably the only fight that I think Martinez shouldnt have fought him over Pirog/Golovkin. That fight shouldnt have happened. Should have been one of the two above. Macklin, to me is a better scalp at this point then either of those two. They really need to take it upon themselves to make some noise, Like right now, they should go after Macklin, its always good to see the guys going after the champ beating the guy the champ just beat but do it better. Those are the things that set the stage. I agree with you on Barker, should have been someone else. :good
Is anyone here questioning Maravilla's activity? Can he actually fight more often than he is fighting now?
He wanted to go 3 times last year, but HBO gave his summer date to Williams. DiBella says they'll do 3 this year though regardless of HBO's support.
And Vyacheslav Senchenko is more deserving of a Pacquiao fight than Floyd Mayweather. After all, Senchenko is a titlist at welterweight and Mayweather isn't.
This. Nailed it on the head, I was just too lazy to write it all up. I'm sure either guy could have a fight against Martinez if HBO would accept it (hint: they've already turned down Pirog in the past) and were willing to accept challenger money (since there just isn't enough money in either fight for both guys to get paid well, and Martinez actually is the real champ).
As if he can get better comp for $10k on FNF, he'd fight worse bums and get paid way less. You expect him to give up 90-99% of his purse so LDB can dismiss him as an ESPN level fighter?
Not necessarily better comp, but it would at least be a start for getting future fights in the US, rather than Pelullo simply praying for the HBO/Showtime date or throwing a fit every time Martinez fights someone else and Titov making offers for fights in Moscow he knows won't happen.
It is not like the executive's at HBO are bending over backwards to showcase these guys. It is not about paying and showcasing the best fighters, it is about making money. Being a supporter of Eastern european fights, I just have to get used to the fact that we/they are routinely treated like third class citizens by the power structure that controls the major U.S. networks.
Well Showtime/HBO passed on a nice cheap unification in Pirog Geale. But you think they'd change their minds once Pirog disposes of a couple of rank journeymen on ESPN. I doubt it. But getting some stronger promo representation in the US, that would help a lot. The thing is, he's not real marketable, he's just the kind of guy Sampson would take a gamble on if he wasn't with Sergio now.
I actually think ESPN FFNS are the way to go. Small pay short term but will lead to the big pay days later. Both should have started out in the US in the fist place. There is still time. They should both chase Quillin or Lee or Macklin now and their promoters should chase the undercard spots to get them started afte a bit of HBO exposure. Quillin still doesn't have Winky fight. Pirog's team should jump all over that with HBO to be the underard fight (its the Mayweather card).
Yeah right. Pirog has just barely been breaking even. The million dollar payday in Russia has never happened since they were conditioned on facing Martinez. Some money would have been put up for geale as well but nothing like that.
I doubt Golden Boy is interested in putting another middleweight prospect in with Pirog. He'll probably continue to face weak in-house competition for a while. Gabe Montoya has said that he makes over a million a fight there. I've only heard the barely broke even story about his fight with Jacobs in the US.
If he'd make a million he would be fighting a bit more often. Montoya misunderstood something. Oh, and I'm sure you'll take my word over Montoya's so I shant bother with sources...
