Will/Should sky pull the plug on boxin?

The suits at Sky need to get their head straight. Frank put on a PPV with 2 fights and no undercard was announced. Same **** as Khan. Stop giving promoters dates for nothing. These scum (promoters) need to earn that date.

Frank should go to Sky with a stacked 5 card main event and pre lims that has guys ready to step in. Bellew and Anderson on the undercard would have kept them ready to step in against Clev or DeGale/Groves.

The system stinks and no one wants to change it. You'd think Sky would as its their business.

I suppose we have to put our hope in Matchroom now as Frank has been conning us for years.

I don't think they should pull the plug on it, and would be highly surprised if they did.

At the end of the day, Sky is a business. It exists to make money for it's shareholders, and as such will make decisions based on maximising income whilst offering a good product for it's customers.

It's easy to cite Haye vs Harrison as an example of a bad decision - but it obviously made heaps of cash for all concerned.... and despite looking like a farce from the outset (and ultimately turning out that way) it was a risk they were prepared to take.

As for Khan, it seems they've learned their lesson, not allowing an individual fighter to demand PPV billing. The buy rate hasn't been up to scratch, and Khan's public persona is that of a money grabbing, jumped up little **** (unfortunately) - maybe they've taken the decision that they don't want to be associated with that kind of person?

At least with Hatton when he was in the money grabbing phase he was fighting guys like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao..... and not getting embroiled in twitter wars over how much the opponent gets, why he should get more and so on.

I've been critical of Sky in the past and will probably remain so in the future - but they've made some major improvements in recent months. The best British fighter is now on Sky, backed by a promoter that is building a very good stable and making the right noises about putting together good shows.

It's just minor changes to their coverage that I think would make all the difference, such as showing the full undercard on the red button, less studio time etc etc.

The real changes won't really take place until 2012 when the TV deals expire. Hopefully we'll see an end to title fights featuring anonymous Johnny Foreigners that even the most hardcore boxing fan cannot possibly have heard of, and see our young prospects tested by proper journeymen from the UK and America (like Page) as opposed to pregnant Latvians.

It's a shame there's no competition, because Setanta was beating them down badly for a short time.

 

Pretty much the main reason Haye vs Harrison happend is because Sky pushed for it so hard. BB you will poor scorn on this but Haye was really agaisnt that fight at first. If he wasn't he would have bigged up Audley a tad more in the origional SSN interviews.

I'm not sure.... to be honest he's not really the type to start bigging opponents up, certainly not before he's fought them.

As for being against it, I'm sure he was at first..... then people started talking and he realised how much money could be made and decided to go for it.

Either way, it was a blatant cashgrab and did absolutely nothing for his career and overall standing.

Maybe it's because I hated both of them and was always cynical about this ''best of enemies'' stuff that was thrown around.

 

I am hoping for Eddie Hearn to put something special together if Froch vs Ward happens on PPV. A quality UK leg.

He bigged up Barrett and Ruiz before there fights and semi- bigged up Audley in the end.

His career is short and he is in the game to make cash like 99.99% of fighters. No one in boxing would turn down that opportunity.

 

There's no way SKY will pull the plug on boxing, how many other sports do they have that they can make PPV?

I'd rather have a couple of good fights on the card, British level maybe, if they can get an alphabet fight on great.

But that's nearly a Mag 7 level card you've got there, since when has the UK leg of a US PPV been as good?

None of the Hatton one's were, despite being guaranteed (as good as) a million buys for Mayweather. Why do you think they had Prizefighter for Malignaggi?

If we are getting two cards I don't mind if the UK leg is slightly weaker, so long as there's some intrigue.

 

boxing is in dire straits. i would not be surprised to see sky scale back a bit.
