I agree watching the Dodson fight at the arena i was certain that it was going to be stopped but to be fair Mick the rub sorted them out. i do think you are right about Degales cuffing shots and that the sight of blood might make the ref start to think.

I would much prefer Degale to win outright than on a Brook jennings kind of stoppage though. If we see blood however i think it could be interesting watchin Smith go for broke coming out swinging

 

Totally agree, also i like to see Chunky win via points or stoppage via punches because he'd then prove himself fully to doubters and fans. Rather then as you say a soft win like Brook's. Not Kell's fault but didn't really win anyone over or prove a great deal.

 

A fair point. But whenever I read 'I fight to the level of my opponent', I worry.

Smith's said that and been facing fairly limited opponents. I like the guy, but can't see him progressing further than he has. Every fight I've seen him in recently, in fact since he appeared on The Contender, he's looked appalling.

His performance against David Banks - the best guy on his resume possibly - was sloppy. And all he needed to do was step back, jab-straight, then bring the left hook to the body. Banks was open to it - and instead Smith's trying to bang him out of there.

If he doesn't box smart, and try to wear DeGale down, he's going to get busted up and stopped.

 

aye, i was watching ward-gatti and catillo-corrales highlights the other day...some of the greatest fights in living memoy yet if they were in the UK, they would've been stopped, especially gatti-ward, no doubt about it.

there are too many early stoppages in the UK, also sam couzens(a brit on the froch undercard) was stopped in helsinki against a german. he was getting beat but it was very very early from the ref...the same ref i believe who let enzo go on too long in his last fight...atsch

 

It was a pathetic stoppage, and the way Dilks didn't complain, and obviously had no intention of having a go during the fight, makes you wonder how straight the fight was. I can't believe Degale is some monster who would intimidate Dilks as he seemed to that night.

 

It's nothing to do with Warren or anything like that. Thats how our refs are. They typically stop fights that bit too early, some extremely early. There is really no chance of a Matthew Saad Muhammad type comeback in a British ring.

 

the dilks stoppage was awful and completely counter productive for degale's career progression.

perhaps dilks knew he was being outclassed and that he'd ultimately lose the fight, but i thought he'd have enough pride to give it a real go and take degale into the later rounds. its not like he was getting battered by those slaps or the half-blocked shots

 

Referees don't treat each fight on it's own merits..... that's a problem.

Some fighters like Frank Bruno might as well be waved off as soon as they are hurt..... whereas others like, say Evander Holyfield should be let go a bit longer.

I think Joe Cortez admitted that he'd have stopped most fighters during round 10 of Holyfield vs Bowe I, but took into account previous experience of Holyfield being hurt and coming back into things.

Just think, if a British ref had took control over Leonard vs Hearns I..... would be Leonard TKO6 but a huge anti-climax of an event.

It's a trend that seems to be getting worse, Howard Foster is probably the main culprit, the stoppage of Murray vs Thaxton was bizarre, and I think he did Dilks vs DeGale too.... yet he timed Moore vs Rhodes really well.

John Keane might be the best for timing a stoppage, he pulled Enzo against Haye - but at least he gave him the chance to try and get up..... and the Sexton vs Chisora rematch was perfectly timed as well.

Can't think of any really bad stoppages that he's done....

Richard Steele and Mills Lane were the best I can think of, always knew the right time.

 

When a stopped fighter doesn't complain at the stoppage its usually a good indication that the ref got it right.

Some of calAghes were absolutely ridiculous- he was a heavy handed chap but some of the stoppages were plain stupid

 

Gatti/Ward Trilogy wouldnt have seen Rd 2 in every fight with the idiots that ref in Britain
