Will the referee be fair to Kovalev against Hopkins?

I wonder about the refereeing in Kovalev-Hopkins. I remember the nationalistic Steve Smoger took Bernard Hopkins side against Karo Murat.

Hopkins is well-respected in America, and there's still a residue of the old "Cold War" mentality going around. People bring up the movie Rocky IV when an American fights a Russian, evoking nationalistic feelings.

Hopkins is a crafty veteran who knows every trick in the book, and when losing a fight will to use any tactic. We've seen him feign low blows and use head butts against Calzaghe, and use a head butt to cut Wright, and pretend to be injured by a foul against Dawson.

I think we should expect more of the same against Kovalev, especially if he gets hurt and feels he may lose.

But will the referee be professional and be fair to Kovalev, or will he do all he can to help the veteran B-Hop?

    Of course he might.

I just hope they don't get the same guy who reffed Creed-Drago......er Drago-Creed. That guy really dropped the ball. That was unfair. Very unfair indeed.

    It wasn't real.

Kovalev is an American who lives in Florida now anyway.

I hope it won't be Smoger, the way he officiated against Murat was disgraceful.

Not sure why people exaggerate Hopkins dirtyness at this point. Compared to earlier in his career, he has fought fairly clean as of late, and more often than not recently, he has been on the receiving end of numerous fouls. Jean Pascal would have KO'd most guys had he landed the 200 rabbit punches on any other man besides Hopkins.

I'm seeing a trend here. A lot of the same pro-Kovalev crowd who seemed to think Hopkins would never "dare" face someone like the "mighty Kovalev", are now claiming that Kovalev is going to get screwed by the judges, the ref will allow Hopkins to break all the rules, Kovalev will be DQ'd "fighting fire with fire", Hopkins will "fake an injury" when he gets hurt, etc.

To be fair, I'm sure there are many in the pro-Hopkins crowd who will be quick to say Hopkins got old over night, he was shot, he was freakin' 50 years old, etc., should Kovalev become the first to stop Bernard.

But it's interesting to see some of the sudden shifts in perspective now that the fight was unexpectedly signed.

If Hopkins cheats to win, boxing as a sport loses. This fight is heavily favored as the ONE fight to show boxing is alive and well.

You mean like how Diego Corrales repeatedly spit his mouth piece out to get extra rest against Castillo in their first fight? Or how Miguel Cotto earlier in his careeer, would purposefully punch opponents in the nuts when they were having success against him, to derail their momentum, Corley, Torres, Juday, off the top of the head.

Or how Hatton landed a few solid low blows on Tszyu, and then finally a good measured aimed one, in front of the ref (who by the way did nothing about it). Or how Bhop stunk up the rematch with Roy Jones
