If not...

1) Taylor wasn't "forced" out of the Super Six - 3 bad knockouts in his last 5 fights suggests that he is getting out for his own safety.

2) We get a Super Six round every few months

I thought the first round was ****ing brilliant... the Froch/Dirrell fight after Abraham/Taylor was the best night in I've had in ages lol, the excitement of whether that company would deliver the stream etc etc

It's a brilliant idea, I didn't think it could work and we'll see if it actually does, but even if it eventually implodes, some good fights will have been made between fighters who could've avoided each other for years - and that's ultimately what matters.

 

I like it but cant see how it can become a regular thing in boxing, it's to dependent on people not getting injured and not wanting out after a fight or two.

 

I actually hear what you're saying PK (I think) and it's echoed by what ScouseLad said.

For this thing to work we can't have people quitting because they lose one match up. I'd hate to see Taylor get hurt by fighting on if he's not fit to do so but his withdrawl damages the competition. Let's say he was the weak link in the whole competition and he's now replaced by a man with a live chance of winning the thing, it's unfair on the fighters Taylor was due to face and changes the whole landscape. He should have carried on without pressure from the media to quit.

I think that the rounds should have been scheuled closer together as well. It will be around 6 months between Froch's first two fights. For something like this it should have been kept to 4 months max (assuming no preventing injuries were sustained).

That said, I still like the tournament and look forward to the later stages.

At the end of the day, Bika/Green will still have the same amount of fights. Abraham's win is still deserving of points, and if anything Bika/Green may make more interesting fights than Taylor, whos weaknesses are well known and may well be a damaged fighter.

The Super 6 is **** hot.

 

Me either, I hope the Super 6 pans out but its too ambitious to be used regulary through the divisions. 4 fighters in semis and finals is a lot easier, more achievable that a 6 man league system.

 

But of course the league system allows the potential of more 'super fights', whereas the draw for just semis might deprive the fans of certain matchups.

Yeah, ideally is great but signing 6 (7 now) fighters up for 3 years isn't something thats realistically doable IMHO. I think the Super 6 will be pushed through to completion by Showtime by hook or by crook but I can't see any one else wanting to try something similar.

The other way you sign 4 fighters up for 2 fights (less than 1 year) if an attractive matchup gets missed then it can happen when the new champ makes his first defence.

 

I think the league format is necessary to determine who really is the best in the division. Styles make fights and if it was a straight knockout we'd potentially still be left with questions. Take the welter division over the last couple of years. Margarito beats Cotto, Cotto beats Mosley and Mosley beats Margarito. If it was straight knockout the competition draw would determine who won. If it was a league we'd know who the best was.

 

Who is the best out of those 3? Even a league system would only give you positions based on the "goal difference" of KOs scored.

 

The big problem for me is the terrible TV coverage. If the Super Six was on a mainstream channel in the uk as it is in America and Germany it would be a more attractive concept for us . It would feel like a bigger event. I subscribed to the first night but didn't for the Ward Kessler Fight. I pay out too much already with Sky Sports and Sky Box Office etc. There is a recession on afterall. I'll probably subscribe to the last two Froch fights but I'm not suscribing to the four other first round fights then the semis then the final. It's ridiculous. One Subscription should have covered the whole tournament. Watching the opening night on Primetime felt a bit depressing and I love boxing. It felt like a further outlay that I couldn't justify.

 

Granted pitching the three of them in a league format together might not help much but if they were in there with 3 or more other fighters things might start to take shape. One of them could lose against a fourth fighter whilst the other two win. You'd then have your two to face off to see who was the best. Doesn't rule out the possibility of having a tournament winner who is beatable by one of the losing contenders but would be slightly more convincing. :nut
