Considering Crawfords best win is Gamboa... then ofc yeah, Usyk already has 3 better wins than any of Crawfords and Gassiev has 1 or 2
This. I don't see any reason for the winner to stay in cruiserweight, which is pretty much a dead division outside of Usyk and Gassiev. But, I'd prefer both to make the jump to heavyweight regardless of who the winner is if it turns out to be a very close decision.
If Deontay Wilder moves down to Cruiser for history, ATG status is handed immediately to the winner of that fight Big incentive for Usyk/Gassiev winner, because they will be fighting the man that Anthony Joshua ducked
Dillian Whyte was always too fat to make Cruiser...Otherwise the trolling would have been effective...Whyte is probably a more dangerous fight vs Wilder than Anthony Joshua, because Anthony Joshua is mentally Defeated & has no chance. Whyte like any heavyweight has a chance to do what Rahman did to Lewis, or Douglas did to Tyson, a motivated Heavyweight can always do it.
Gassiev's a more dangerous opponent for Usyk and he stands a much better chance of beating him that the vast majority of HWs do, IMO. The only time I've seen Usyk legitimately hurt was when Beterbiev dropped him with a body shot in the amateurs and Gassiev is the best body puncher in the game North of 160 and he wields savage KO power in that left hand of his. Here you can see the problems Usyk's speed poses HWs or rather SHWs. This content is protected
BRIEDIS PRAISES GASSIEV, DORTICOS CAN'T WAIT Both Mairis Briedis and Yunier Dorticos lost their semi-finals with great honour. Here are their interesting thoughts on the historic Ali Trophy Cruiserweight Final between Aleksandr Usyk and Murat Gassiev in Moscow. Usyk came through a tough and hard-fought battle to claim a 12-round majority decision over Briedis in Riga. Gassiev produced a stunning 12th-round knockout win against Dorticos in his semi-final in Sochi. Both semi-finals were dubbed ‘Fight of the Year’ candidates and make the final one of the most anticipated match-ups in recent boxing history. “Both boxers have their advantages and it will go down on how they will manage to put those in use,” said Briedis. “From an emotional point of view, my favorite in this fight is Gassiev – a modest guy who does his job with dignity and leaves a good impression of himself.” Yunier Dorticos: “They are both great fighters. Usyk is a technician with superb skills and Gassiev is also skillful with power. It will be a great fight between two classy guys. The fans are in for an amazing final and I can’t wait to see it myself.” “Gassiev should give me a rematch since we where the best fight in the tournament all the fans want to see us do it again!” The Ali Trophy Cruiserweight Final is guaranteed to produce fireworks with the winner becoming the first boxer ever to win the Muhammad Ali Trophy and unify the cruiserweight titles in the four belt era. The belts on the line will be the WBO, WBC, IBF and WBA Super and RING Magazine’s vacant cruiserweight championship strap. Lonnie Ali, the wife of the late heavyweight icon Muhammad Ali, will be guest of honour while watching Usyk-Gassiev live at the Olimpiyskiy Sports Complex and after the fight reveal and award the winner with the Muhammad Ali Trophy, The Greatest Prize in Boxing.
I’d like to see the winner stay at CW. If the winner can keep the sanctioning bodies happy and remain unified champion longer than Hopkins and Crawford were able to do, I think the benefits to staying put at CW outweigh the likely foolish pursuit of chasing HW glory. A long reigning unified champion could bring credibility to the CW division. Plus, assuming the purses are commensurate with the status of being The Man, this could potentially motivate fighters from other divisions AND the sanctioning bodies to work toward fights that lead to more unified champions. If Usyk wins, I believe he has the makings of a global superstar. Eastern European (white) Olympic Gold medalist. Proven Road Warrior. Even as the champion, with Olympic gold medal pedigree, he has no problem defending/risking his title(s) on the challenger’s (Huck, Briedis, Gassiev) home soil. Based on what we’ve seen from guys like Prime RJJ and Ward, this alone warrants universal respect for Usyk, no matter what happens against Gassiev. He looks like a bad@55 with that gap-toothed smile, weird looking eyes and crazy haircuts. Seriously, he looks like a boxer MMA fans could get behind. Of course the cynic in me expects the titles to become splintered almost immediately, all in the name of stepping over large denominations of paper money to pick up coins.
