Man I didnt realize its been so long since the Cotto fight.

You would think that if Canelo doesnt fight a top 5 middleweight sometime this year, the lineage would have to be restarted though.... so I suppose the thread does have a point. 5 months after Canelos next fight he will have gone two years without facing an actual middleweight. Time flies lol.

Interesting. I suppose G vs Jacobs being for the lineal title is actually a fair question.

I think it will depend on what Canelo does next. If he fights another fighter thats not ranked at middleweight.... then the winner of Golovkin vs Saunders, which will most likely happen next anyways, will become lineal.

So really, Golovkin probably becomes the lineal champion this year anyways...

What has historically been the case with lineal champions? How long can a champion go without fighting a divisions contenders before you allow others to establish new lineage?

The Ring stripped Stevenson for not fighting anyone ranked in their top10 for 18 months. It'll be the same for Canelo by May of 2017.

Quillin couldn't take that belt off Lee, but BJS sure did!!!

Ive been saying this for a while.

It's been 2 yrs since Yeller edged out Cotto, and another full yr since he's layed his title at GGGs feet.

He completely left the division again, and rather than coming back into it, even at Yellerweight, he goes straight to SuperYellerweight.

GGG v Jacobs, #1 vs #2 SHOULD DEFO EST A NEW LINEAGE.

Especially in the TNBR which claim not to be biased.

In my opinion, when GGG unifies with Saunders he'll be unified and undisputed, therefore lineal, champ.

A good argument could be made he is already, since Canelo handed him his MW belt and left the division.

    I won't argue with either.

True. But BJS did it with a singe point.
Jacobs demolished Quillin in 1 round.
    (Not that it really matters)

Canelo is the champ at the moment and you're asking if a fight not involving Canelo can produce a second lineal champion in the same division simultaneously? That is an oxymoron when you know what the lineal championship is.

Is it a permanent title? Does it not expire?

I've never heard anyone claim it should expire in less than 12 months of defending it and not publicly announcing a decision to relinquish it.

    Until now, that is.

I think if Canelo doesn't fight at up this year he'd be stripped of that designation as Lineal, saying that though he's only Lineal through a technicality anyway the Lineal Title while rightfully Canelo's was just a throw in from the Cotto fight. I don't have a problem with his claim as Lineal til now, but if he doesn't defend the title this year he should be stripped. Thinking about it though he has 18 months everyone has been crying that 155 is MW so he has defended his title since winning it.

One example is when Pacquiao was 140 lineal champ. The difference is that after Pacquiao beat Cotto for his WW title, his team said he would be dropping the 140 belts not to return any time soon if ever. I remember reading their statement that they had reached out to The Ring telling them of their intentions upon agreeing to defend their WW belt against Clottey, yet The Ring kept him their champion until the week after the Clottey fight.

Honestly I agree with this even though I feel Canelo ends the year still as Champ, Undisputed>Lineal to even have a Lineal Champ one has to be undisputed first there are cases when a clear #1&2 Can fight for Lineal but technically GGG-Geale was 1 vs 2 at the time and Cotto was still Lineal Champ. Even though I feel Alvarez veats Golovkin if GGG, unifies all the belts unfisputed is greater. real talk GGG doesn't even need the WBO belt and is Uundisputed already, when the organization were holding meeting in an effort to make more unified champs the WBO never showed up so to me if you have the WBC,WBA,&IBF your Undisputed to me.

The Ring ain't the lineal title and Stevenson still holds the latter distinction at 175.
