Totally agree with this. The internet, social media, Mayweather's bad guy persona creating the guy everyone loved to hate, his unbeaten record ,his wizardy in boxing skills, the rise in PPV pricing and the fact that he faced fighters who already carried a big following and have exciting styles in De La Hoya, Canelo and Paquiao helped him be involved in the most profitable PPV's ever. The record with Pacquiao is what it is due to all the above plus the anticipation of the world for five years to make the fight happen.

Perhaps another fighter will beat that record but he will need to posses similar attributes to Mayweather in what I explained above. The only fighter I see doing that in the forseeable future is Canelo.Perhaps if GGG and Canelo dominate their respective divisions for a while, beating big names and enough time is left to marinate, this could be a big event someday.

    Will anyone

Floyd was a "superstar" for all the wrong reasons.

    Probably.

Are you classing him as the biggest boxing superstar of all time?

I would argue that Tyson and Ali are bigger than him. If we had all the social media and access to the internet we have now, then they would probably drawf him.

Ali and Tyson are miles ahead, yes Floyd have the records etc..but you know there is boxing outside of America too?and even in America i
think Ali and Tyson are way more bigger stars

    Practically whole world from 10yrs
girls to 90yrs old grandmothers have heard the names of Ali and Tyson.with Floyd i think it's little bit different.

And yes, eventually somebody probably breaks Floyd PPV records etc..but it also depends what way boxing will keep developing.and also what way world will develop.

Canelos 24 and has already sold 3 million PPVs

He just needs to hire Floyd senior as his trainer and he'll be on his way to Canastota

I would argue that Louis, Ali, Tyson, Leonard and Oscar were bigger superstars in their time. I don't see Alvarez reaching that level because he is simply not that good. Who will be the next superstar? Who knows? Who had any idea Mayweather would be as big as he got. The only thing for sure is that someone will eventually assume that mantle too.

Well Broner already tried being a weaker imitation of Mayweather in both charade persona (though I think Broner is actually that dumb and grating, with floyd you've always been able to see a large extension of it is an act) and lesser talent, he got to a reasonable position in the sport but nowhere near 'superstar' level nor crossing over to the mainstream.

People also doubted there will ever be a star as big as Jackson, Louis, Schmeling, Dempsey, Marciano, Robinson, LaMotta, Ali, Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield, De La Hoya...etc

    Kids being kids again.

Ali was far bigger than Floyd, as was Dempsey and Louis and Tyson, Oscar, and SRL were certainly in the same league

That's one way to define how big a fighter is, another is name recognition. I guarantee you more people on this planet have heard of Ali then Mayweather. Another is butts in the seats, Dempsey fights had over 100,000 attending them.

The world stopped to watch Louis and Schmeling II, which was hyped as a mini war between the US and Germany.

Then there was the FOTC (the real one) between Ali and Frazier.

You can't just use todays PPV and social media, neither of which existed in the past, to define how big fighters were in history.

I think the OP is confusing income with popularity. They are independent of each other. Income wise, I believe it will be difficult with the current landscape of boxing where fighters are concerned with being a star. Popularity wise, depends who you ask. Tyson, Ali, Leonard are household names in the USA for the most part. I would venture to say Ali and Tyson on a global scale. Mayweather is probably popular in the urban community though. Even ODLH was extremely popular in the USA in the 90s

Canelo is a basic fighter. To be a bonafide superstar you have to be exceptionally talented in both skills and natural talent. Canelo lacks both.

This dude is being jammed down people's throat when its clearly obvious he's not what he's made out to be.

His two biggest victories were gifts from corrupt officials.

How can you be a superstar when you can't even beat fighters that are way smaller than you (He's a middleweight) ?
