Wilfred Benitez made history by becoming a world champion at 17 years of age by out-boxing Cerventes. I mean, it's crazy that a 17 year old could be fighting at that level in a sport like this. What an achievement, whichever way you look at it. My question is, will there ever be a champion that young again? I think it may be a very long time until a 17 year old is challenging for a world title again.
Posible but dobutful. It typicsly takes a top levle boxer 3-5 about 20 fights years to both earn a tittle shot and devlope the experance to gain a tittle shot. Having an outstanding amature career can put a boxer on the fast track 15 fights Olympic experance is a pluse espicaly if he wins a medal even better if it is gold. However the Youngest age one can fight at the Olympics is 17. It has happened before but it is very unlikely that no matter how good that a gold bedalest is going to get a tittle shot in his first fight. I rember Bones Adams turned pro at a very young age and later in his career held a tittle. I think most American as well as Europan boxers turn pro after they turn 18. If it dose happen He will probbly be from a country without a strong amature program.
Doubtful. It's a fantastic achievement and with more dedication who knows how great Benitez could've been. His natural talent allowed him to be competitive with ATG's when he was hardly bothering to train.
Personally, I think Benitez trained a lot harder than he was leading on. I saw a segment on him before he became champion, he seemed to be very dedicated to Boxing and only seemed to be motivated by the idea of becoming a world champion. That said, perhaps he let his foot off the gas after he eventually won the title, but it's hard for me to believe Benitez could look that good physically if he didn't train.
