The first and 3rd were close actually. Only the second one wasnt close. BEsides, with ward's high guard, gatti got too much credit for punches that supposedly landed. I could actually have seen that one going for a draw.
Ward won 2 rounds in the rubber match. The first was the 4th when Gatti hurt his hand. The other was the 6th when Ward scored a late KD after being outboxed for 2:55 of the round. Gatti won about 80% of the rounds in that one-sided trilogy.
I'd hesitate to say that Corrales was light years better than Gatti. Gatti was a B level fighter, and Corrales was a B+. Both had major flaws, but made up for it with other skills. I love how it's "let's underrate Gatti's career" day on ESB. We always knew what Gatti was, give the man the respect he deserves for the great fights he's given us.
Matthew Saad Muhammad, Erik Morales, Bobby Chacon, to name a few. Gatti was a "B" fighter, but that's not really an insult. At least how I would look at it: In their primes: A: Mayweather, DLH, RJJ, Trinidad, Whitaker, Mosley, Barrera A-/B+: Corrales, Castillo, Casamayor. B= Gatti, Chavez (Jesus), Carr, Campas, Rivera B-/C+= Ward, Augustus
I don't hope there will be another Gatti. A guy with this much heart and courage combined with no desire to defend himself - simply spells - brain damage.
Exactly. Topics like this make you wonder how much boxing people watch, or why people get sentimental and exaggerate things.
There will be another fighter who gives fans their money's worth and displays courage, heart, and toughness...there always is. But Gatti will be missed.
