Anthony Joshua v Klitschko is less than two weeks away and they'll fight in front of a crowd of around 90,000. This got me thinking, will this current generation of boxers be able to exceed 100,000? Don't get me wrong - 90,000 is a great achievement. Joshua and Canelo are the only two who could come close currently. They both have huge followings and have fights in the weight that would generate huge interest, Joshua v Wilder & Canelo v GGG!
if wembley was 100,000 seater is would exceed it, nothing to do with popularity just venue. currently i dont think it will happen, the majority of 100,000 plus stadiums are all in america for college football, but america has that mgm las vagas, high ticket prices ppv for big fights model ingrained in it, so wont't happen there, north korea has a 120,000 stadium but pro boxing aint happening there and the melbourne cricket grounds is over 100,000 but would be a bad venue for boxing. the nou camp could do it but boxing isnt popular in spain, which means that wembley is the only stadium near 100,000 in a place where stadium boxing is popular which is short of 100,000 croke park in ireland may have a chance a 100,000 given its bigger pitch size
Like said, it's more about capacity as it is about popularity. If a domestic rematch can pull 80.000 creaming fans in the UK, then a big heavyweight fight can pull over 100k for sure.
