We saw Usyk, a career cruiserweight, move up to heavyweight and put on a masterclass against one of the division's elite fighters. Will this begin a trend of more cruisers moving to heavyweight? The heavyweight division is where the money and glory is after all. If we're being honest, hardly anyone gives a damn about the cruiserweight division. I would really like to see more cruisers move up to heavyweight. If there's one thing the heavyweight division needs, it's lighter, quicker, fitter, and more technical fighters.
Cruisers move up all the time with varying degrees of success. Cunningham, Huck, Gassiev, Gomez, Haye, Banks, Adamek, Cooper, Norris, Holyfield, Qawi, Mormeck, Cole...even Breidis had one heavyweight fight. Okolie will be the next to move up. I don't think Usyk is going to have any effect on the situation.
Murat Gassiev also moved almost at the same time as Usyk, from the cruisersweight category to the heavyweight category, but not with the same success. So it can become a trend, but winning a title cannot become a trend.
Definitely not a new trend and long may it continue. Agree with your sentiments on having greater technical fighters more fleet footed as the crossover fights against the divisions ‘big men’ are great to watch.
This was what I was going to mention, and the list is even longer as that. Almost every successful cruiser has moved up to heavy at one point. It's a major factor in the sudden quality drops the division suffers from time to time. Red hot, to just meh...
