By his own admission, Vitali Klitschko has had to reduce the amount of roadwork he typically employs when preparing for a fight and rely on swimming to develop his stamina. In my opinion, this is a genuine cause for concern. Although I do not agree with others, who claim Klitschko has had stamina problems in the past, I do think he could run into trouble now, if the fight happens to go into the later rounds. There is, quite simply, no substitute for roadwork when training for a fight. Thoughts?

Cardio is cardio. You can get the same heart workout doing other cardio activity as you can running.

I stopped running about 2 months ago because my ankle was bothering me and I'm acutally in better shape now since I switched to doing the Precor and walking uphill more. I didn't think it was possible due to the way I felt after running but I am definitely in the same or better shape since I quit running.

what do you think all of the sparring and previous training camps were for?

Vitali has not been siting on his ass for 4 years.

It has me concerned because substituting swimming for roadwork could hint at signs of wear and tear or even age. My grandfather who is 72 years old and still climbs mountains recently had to switch cardio exercises. Of course Vitali is young compared to that, but still... And running is really hard on the knees so maybe it is for the best.

when Vitali fights Peter he's not going to be swimming through rounds. anyways, Vitali by a knockout sometime in the later rounds !!! Peter is just a huge punching target for the Elder Klitshcko.

At 37 with a history of injury problems, running on paved hills in Germany is probably just too tough on his knees. That doesn't mean he eschews running altogether...he may use a tread mill. Not to mention the fact that skipping jump is a better cardiovascular workout than running. Honestly, I'd only be concerned were he out-of-shape. For calories burning, there is obviously nothing like roadwork.

He may not. I think part of Peter's strategy could be to lay back and let the fight go into the later rounds.

I think VK will be ok in this area, but I could see Peter's corner using this strategy.
