After his humiliating 4th knockout defeat at the hands of Danny Garcia back in July, Amir Khan came out with the excuses that Freddie Roach wasn't paying him enough attention in training camps and wasn't a good trainer at teaching defence. Therefore, as we know, he's switched trainers and hired Virgil Hunter. Now I ask this. Can even a new, defensively-minded trainer like Hunter help Khan overcome his biggest weakness which is his notoriously dodgy chin? Or is Freddie Roach right when he says Khan will never change his style? Because, if Khan doesn't change then I firmly believe he's in for some more punishing knock-out defeats when he faces the big name fighters.
i think he could change, but will he be as effective? Roach made him a unified world champ and at one point a lot of people saw him as the no1 in the division, as roach utilised his explosiveness. I discount the Peterson loss as Peterson was jacked up, the Garcia loss was a good ko, Khan should have kept his hands up but its always dangerous in there with a puncher, so why change trainers and possibly styles? Too quick to blame Roach i think, Roach really did get a great deal out of Khan
virgil can teach and train khan all he wants but if he cant get in betweem khans ears and enforce a game plan on him for 12rounds nothing will change.
I doubt it , at some point khan will get caught with a good hook on the chin and won't be able to take it.
in a nutshell, no. the only thing that will help Khan, is clever match making. and my bet is thats what Goldnboy will do for Khan. Keep him away from big punchers, up until the time Khan cnat put bums in seats
I don't think he'll change him all that much, but reinvent and accentuate what he is good at, and make the most of his tools. He won't be able to turn Amir into Andre Ward or Floyd Mayweather defensively. He has been fighting in a certain way the day he stepped into the ring, so it's almost impossible to turn him into that level of defensive fighter. But what Virgil CAN do is build around that and work with what he has got, the chin has always been suspect and so has his defensive abilities to protect it. What Virgil can teach Amir Khan, is most importantly, common sense, and to fight with a clear mind. It's almost unbelievable that Freddie Roach couldn't train Khan into a way, so he didn't entice and get caught up in scraps, and that when he takes a punch, he doesn't see the red mist. But Freddie Roach didn't change anything and always sends his fighters into WAR! Personally, I think you'll see Virgil get Amir Khan running a lot more in fights, keeping on the back foot, behind a jab and making sure that if he commits to any power punch, the risks of getting hit back in the process are low. Making use of the tools he has, he's a big lad and has good range and fast hands. He can be molded in a different way and be more effective IMO. Problem is, this should have been done 3 years ago. It may be to little to late, regardless of only being 25. Floyd Mayweathers worst nightmare, even more so now with Virgil holding the reigns.
Khan's a great fighter but only when he has his head screwed on probably. The past year he's done nothing but make excuses for his poor performances (he was crap in the Peterson fight as well) when it's been obvious that his flaws are down to him, not his trainer's game plan. GBP will definitely protect him now just like they do with Alvarez. They'll feed 3 or 4 easy opponents before throwing him in with one of the big boys again.
why are people assuming GBP will try and nurture him? theyve invested a lot in him to see him **** it away, in his place they now have Danny Garcia, an unbeaten young American with a knock out punch whos good in front of the camera. Khan isn't a ticket seller, but is a "name" so whos to say they wont give him a couple of easy wins then start using him as a gatekeeper, eg feed him to Matthysse et al? or they might give him a few wins and maybe, just maybe, cash out on him with a Mayweather ppv? i thought that might have been what the plan was til his two losses, so maybe they'll try and rush this through who knows
I hope you're right they don't protect him. Nothing gets on my t*ts more than an over-hyped fighter who fights bum while his promoters bang on about what a big name he is. My feeling is Khan will lean on them for a rematch with Garcia but Danny's side (his Dad) will refuse. Be interesting to see what they end up doing with him.
Does Khan really need to change that much though? Is it really a drastic change he needs or does he just need to tweak a few things like moving out of range after he gets his punches off? Ok he tends to fall apart after he gets tagged but can he not just learn what to do if that happens? It always seemed to me that he didn't really know what he should be doing after that happens and got macho because he didn't know any better. Isn't that something that comes with experience?
I think the change will be better then staying with Roach, whether he listens to Hunter fully and applies his work i'm not so sure..
I like Khan - never a dull fight. But, he is to boxing what Theo Walcott is the football. Lots of pace but no guile. For every great win (Khan beating Judah and Maidana; Walcott's hat trick for England), there's a performance of frustrating ineffectualness. If he was merely poor I don't think anyone would care, it's the sense of waste and that his problems are part self-inflicted that irks.
