Will we ever have a true atg in modern era?

Discussion in 'British Boxing Forum' started by Phill-Mitchell, Aug 29, 2012.

  1. We produce a lot of b+/a- fighters, but it seems our guys are always found wanting at the top level. Khan didn't have the chin or the brain, froch was just too basic to deal with ward, Haye didn't have the mindset to overcome wlad.

Even our recent top guys, Hatton outclassed by Floyd and pac, Calzaghe probably the closest but didn't prove it and probably would have lost to prime jones, Toney, and Hopkins.

    Lewis too many names missing.

Do you think we will ever have a true atg, a guy who fights and beats the best, a guy that wins all the biggest fights of his career.

The yanks have a seemingly endless supply, and here comes ward who has basically surpassed Calzaghe already as the goat at 168, that lasted long.

Where is our andre ward and Floyd Mayweather, instead we get Calzaghe and Hamed who were "good, but couldn't beat the best"

    Andre Ward an ATG?

Although starting in Canada, LL is a British ATG.

    Lennox Lewis.

    Joe Calzaghe.

Prince Naseem Hamed: was the biggest thing to happen to boxing since Muhammad Ali & Mike Tyson.

What the **** has Andre Ward done..? that Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank never did...?

Andre Ward could get beat by Chad Dawson and he will be forgotten.

We have got plenty of all-time great fighters.

Lewis - too many names missing? Haha....

Swap a 2002 Tyson for either a 1996 Tyson, or Wlad at that time... it's the only way it could have realistically been better.

Bowe would have beat him in 1992.

Too many internet heroes about for any modern fighter to be respected as a ATG. If the internet had been around for ever, Joe Louis would have been a bum SRR would have lost to many to be great. Marciano = protected etc.
Lennox Lewis is a ATG. I suspect that so should calzaghe be. I would also offer up Froch. Being ATG does not mean unbeaten.

Yeah we need to look at our criteria, boxing has changed and the fighters don't fight every month or 2. It's a shame but if a guy is getting big wins on a regular basis then it shouldn't stop him being a ATG.

Hopkins is one from the modern era.

Lewis is an all time great. I did not always like the way he fought but he took on the best of his era with the exception of Bowe though the fault was not his more Rock Newman's. Calzaghe who I am not a fan of at all has to be considered great as it would be churlish not to. However I hold Hatton in more esteem than Calzaghe as he fought peak Money Mayweather and Pacman. Yes he got outclassed by them but he beatband lost to only the very best. Barry McGuigan's legacy suffers greatly for avoiding the career defining fight with Azumah Nelson. As you know I have high hopes for Ajose Olusegun who takes on the toughest fighter in the division Matthyse on the 8 of Sept in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Cafe and Hotel. I think he has the ability and desire to represent Nigeria, Africa and the United Kingdom as a truly great fighter. Opportunity has been denied him until now but this great fighter has what it takes. In my opinion Matthyse is much better than the Danny Garcia's and Amir Khans of this world

I think David Price has the most potential, if hes brought up right and either avoids the Klitschkos or catches one when they are proper old he could dominate the heavyweight division for a long time
