Yes, cause basketball and football are brand new sports. Back in Tyson's era, all the talent was boxing because those sports didn't exist. Oh, wait a minute...
Do you pay attention to the world or just lost in time somewhere. The heavyweight champion was once looked at as the King of all sportsmen. Not anymore. You do realize they don't show boxing anymore on regular TV. At least in the US. While boxing was once a mainstream sport it is now probably as popular as volleyball here. You cannot simply turn on the TV and watch a fight or ask your neighbor who's fighting. It's more than obvious the rise of basketball and football have went up. While boxing has been sent to the back of the bus.
They were a big deal but so was boxing. It was shown on CBS, ABC, and CBS. Hoya was really the last guy to see one of those major channels and get that type of push. Which is part of the reason he was as big as he became. Mainstream coverage which you can't buy anymore.
interesting thread the unknown part about tyson that most of the casual fanz dont understand is that tyson dispite having the best speed and power comboz the planet haz ever seen at heavy weight (not sayin he had faster handz than ali or more power than big george juz sayin that COMBINED hiz speed and power waz the BEST) HOWEVER without the VISION and BELIEF of "cus" the world never would have had the glimpse of tyson that we did as it took alot of EFFORT from cus and many otherz to help mold tyson into the sytle that would best suit hiz physical abilitiez and limitationz i feel itz EASY to FEEL that tyson waz so GREAT that he would have made it to the top regardless BUT i dont think that would have been the case as "cus" took on a role of more than just a trainer but a role that waz a friend, father and mentor to tyson that waz able to get the most important thing from tyson which waz RESPECT and all that had to take place when tyson waz a young teenager in order to put him on his journey to the title at 19 or 20 or whateva lol (arrrrgh me memory fadin ) not a easy task when dealing with a teenage boy that ran the streetz freely before cus met him im sure there has been many other potential tysonz runnin the streetz in past and i bet there will be many more in future there just is not many OLD WISE PATIENT dudez around that have the ability to COMMIT to the TRAINING needed to exploit their abilityz
Mike Mollo is EASILY the most feroicous heavy around. He's not top-class, but that wasn't the criteria for this thread, was it?
i have for yearz read the debatez of the BIG POWERFUL americanz that could be boxing champz if they didnt opt for football or basketball instead makez me LAUGH listening to both sidez of the coin of this debate people will take a look at a guy like ray lewis (or whoever) and STATE conclusively that if he would have trained boxing from an early age how he would have wiped the heavyweight division clean well here is the way i look at it in a fantasy type way take 50 of the best football and basketball athelitez that everyone agreed on overall as having MASSIVE BOXING POTENTIAL and UPSIDE letz say for fun 25 guyz like ray lewis, LT and bucketz of other line backerz, tight endz, etc etc, then throw in a 25 power forwardz etc etc from basketball. take them back to when they were 12 and start training them as boxerz until their 22. well i think the thing that would surprise alot of people is that out of those 50 phenomenal athelitez i bet most of them for some reason or another would FAIL when it came to wiping the heavyweight division clean. wouldnt be surprised if alot of them STALLED for various reasonz (bad knock out ruining their confidence bein only one reason) and didnt even get to a world class level before retirering for various reasonz so mostly i agree with the people that laugh when dudez say this guy or that guy from the nfl or nba would of been the best boxer ever HOWEVER that dont change the fact that i would bet ONE of those 50 would go on to wipe the heavyweight division clean
I respect your view latineg especially the fact that "there just is not many OLD WISE PATIENT dudes around that have the ability to COMMIT to the TRAINING needed to exploit tysonesque potential abilities"
It's hard to really know exactly. Tyson was a rare type of fighter. It's not often you get a guy who's as stocky and as fast, as Tyson. But, I would say that Dempsey, though not quite as fast, was just as ferocious. Louis, in his attacks, could be just as violent. But, you have to wonder whether we have the caliber of trainer today to build that kind of a fighting machine like D'amato did. I'll say one thing though. If there was ever a division filled with guys who would make perfect victims for a Tyson-like assault, then I think this is it with all of the tall, tentative, boxers around now. It's often said that this is the era of the superheavyweight, but I can't help but think that a short fighter with power and speed would be a perfect candidate to own the division.
Does anything think that Lebron James could be an ATG purely based on his physical potential in boxing?
