Will we ever see co-promoted events?

Chuck wasn't the face of the UFC; Randy had just beat him in there first fight beforehand.

Chuck also fought Guy Mezger well before that.

 

Then why didnt Dana send Couture to the GP? Chuck walked in their with custom made clothing. Dana spend thousands on his training personally as he was sure Chuck was going to win. You best believe Chuck was the face of the UFC.

 

Get over it, because it is accurate. The UFC locks it's fighters in and attempts to monopolize their talents. Just like the NBA. Just like the NFL.

That is exactly what the NFL did with the AFL, and what the NBA did with the ABA. Remember how they were promoting the PRIDE champions coming into the UFC almost as if they were trying to become unified champions? Answer me this, because I really don't know the answer to the following question. Did Buffer announce Jake Shields as a former StrikeForce Champion during his pre-fight intro? I watched that fight in a restaurant, and don't recall.

MMA is not a team sport. There are no franchise teams. I thought that would be obvious. I'm glad you brought this up, though. How independent are these franchises? You don't see one of the NFL franchises being free to play a CFL franchise in an independent promotion do you? No you don't. The franchises are restricted to a set of rules determined by their league. Just like the fighters are in the UFC.

When the gp started Couture was scheduled to fight Ortiz for the undisputed title therefore Dana sent over Chuck who had nothing better to do than to wait.

Chuck was a star in the UFC for sure but he had yet to win the career-defining fights against Tito and Couture that established him as THE posterboy for the UFC.

 

I always thought the story was that White's dream fight was Liddell/Wanderlei so he sent Liddell over to try to 'book' that match. Only for Jackson to get in the way lol

 

Because Couture was the champ, he didn't want to keep the star away from home for too long; every fight requires training and time off, and he wanted Couture to not waste time outside of the UFC.

Chuck on the other hand, had some time to spare. Chuck was definitely not the face of the UFC at the time, Couture and Tito were the bigger draws at the time.

 

The bet was for a Wand-Chuck fight, which didn't happen.

Kind of sucks, would have been a great fight, with Chuck having a great opportunity to win.

Also brings up another point about co-promoting:

You all seem to be forgetting when Dana invited Wand over to announce that there would be a fight between him and Chuck, only for Pride to use it as a PR stunt, with Wand in a Pride T shirt, having no intention of ever getting the deal done.

Wand was also in the crowd during a Couture fight, again, Pride had no intention of getting a deal done.

So Dana sent Chuck over to Pride twice, once without any guarantee of the fight everybody wanting to see happening. Pride sent Wand over twice, only for it to be a total fraud with them backing out and never actually trying to get a fight signed.

MMA is international NFL and NBA are really just an American only league. MMA has strengths in different regions and great fighters in those regions who could make good money. The NFL is really just an American thing that no one else plays.

Smaller company does it but i doubt ufc will ever do it unless they get rid of white.

I would love to see overeem and fedor smash the ufc heavyweights

 

Co-promotion is a long, long, long way off. The only way it would happen is if a promotion were to become big enough that the UFC co-promoting would actually make more money than doing a show by themselves. We would need to see a really huge change in the MMA landscape because no company is on the UFC's level yet.

 

This has little or nothing to do with my comparison, but I'll play along. The NBA stands for National Basketball Association, and the NFL stands for National Football League; I would suspect they would be lacking in the international competition area.

None of this matters, though.

 

You can never say never but I don't it ever happens. It was difficult enough for the UFC to breakthrough and become profitable, and now any rival promotion is going to have to put up with the UFC moving heaven and earth to undermine them.

 

MMA is like soccer which is more international and with strongholds in different areas of the world, you have strengths in Europe, South America, Africa etc. All these teams and countries play to determine the best within their own region and also play against champions from different regions, and one every four years all the top teams plays against each other.

This is how MMA should be with different promotions having its fighters fight for a belt, the champions of those promotions then get to fight the champions of other promotions. Zuffa however doesnt want to play, instead it wants people to think that it has the best fighters without those fighters actually fighting champions from other promotions.
