Will we ever see a fight in the heavyweight division like this again? Bobbing, weaving, head movement, inside fight, combinations upstairs and down. Both guys will to take in order to give and nothing but heart! Will we, and by what fighters?

shavers weighed 206 that night, lyle weighed 216

if they were around today they would have cut down to cruierweight

    Why not?

First, you picked one of the best HW slugfests of the 70s. There was little "D" or slickness in this one :D Lyle partially rope a doped Shavers, then stopped him. Shavers was a hard puncher but didn't have the best stamina and had a suspect chin. Second, CW Quarry beat both of them rather comfortably.

So while it was a very entertaining 70s fight, neither of them nor Quarry would be a factor in today's HW div. They might beat C level or small B level HWs but that's about it.
Never mind Wlad, I can see Pulev, Stiverne, Povetkin, Haye, Fury, etc class HW beat all three 70s HWs.

Quarry was a heavyweight as was Lyle and Shavers. Its not about weight though, its about skills and willingness to take chances. Thats the difference between heavyweights past and heavyweights today. When the last time we saw two top fighters let their hand go like that? You probably have to go back to Bowe-Holyfield. When is the last time you saw a boy attack by both fighters? Persona i think both these.guys and Quarry dissect most of the slow, lazy heavies today. Only Wlad goes unscathed against them and thats becahe holds so much.

oh ya beacuse an already bulky 6ft Shavers beefing up by 25 pounds is the best option for him:lol::lol::lol:

he would be an obese punching bag for the division

Wlad would knock Quarry, Lyle, and Shavers :!: into next week and it would have little to do w/holding... Wlad would hardly have to vs small HWs and CW JQ. Like I said it was a very entertaining fight, but that has nothing to do w/those HWs chances in this era. You're suffering from nostalgia and maybe something not as sympathetic.

Btw, Ali and other HWs of that era also held very much... Ali was a master of it, using it to control and keep "massive" 205# Frazier off of him :yep

Looks just like Gavern vs Firtha. Same skill level, ability, and athleticism and everything.

Boo Hoo, Muricans do not dominate HW boxing. If not for the good ol' days when those awful Eastern Euro's did not compete.

    MURIKA DA BES'TISTS...

The juice was already in boxing by the 1970's.

Way more guys than fans want to believe.

Boxing's been filled with people who'd do anything to win from its inception.

In the 1970's, not only had PED's been around for decades (including being widespread in the Olympics by the 1960's, which was a natural pipeline to the pros), there wasn't near the stigma attached to PED's as there is today. Plenty of athletes are still willing to risk it today even in the current climate.

Back then? There's no doubt in my mind plenty of fighters were on something we'd deem illicit by modern standards. They worked. There was no testing. The stakes were high, and the sport depends on peak performance.
