Some of you guys are complete morons. This isnt a h2h debate, but more about skills and excitement. You simply dont see the same skills and excitement today as in that fight. There are plentybof other fights from the past to pick from as well, i just pick that as a quick pick.
Glazkov-Rossy was another really good...and recent...heavyweight scrap. Adamek-Szpilka should also be good.
You imply these techniques aren't displayed today because fighters aren't skillful enough. Have you considered the possibility that they are simply not successful anymore? (Successful) techniques change in all sports over decades and there is no reason to think boxing is an exception.
If you check the scores from Olympic records, even in the sixties you can tell people are using. Now think of all the boxers from that era who won Olympic medals and would have been around all that. Ali, Frazier, Foreman. It ain't just boxers, or the Olympics either. No horse comes close to beating the records set by Seabiscuit. Right after those amazing victories everyone started getting drug tests and the scores dropped right off a cliff.
After reading through this thread I am quite shocked by how many people (including the thread starter) confuse skill with exciting style. If an exciting style equaled skill, then why isn't Arturo Gatti (RIP) headed for the top 10 ATG?
Are you the worst poster on this forum? Haye had to make 15-20 pound weight gains to move up to heavy. Not the other way around you clown. Thompson kicked Hayes ass. Pure and simple. There is no excuse for the loss. None. Haye wasn't good enough to go the rounds. 40 year old Thompson was. Thomson was good enough to take Hayes punches. Haye was not good enough to take The Cats. Its a 100% legit loss just like Wlads loss to the bum Purrity.
Come on man, are you implying body punching and throwing more than a two punch combination no longer pays dividends?
Its about excitement and willingness to actually wage war. It still happens of course, but not very often and not with great combination punching and body work. You hardly ever see heavyweights work the body anymore or move their heads. These things are immensely useful in breaking down another fighter as well as creating excitement.
Povetkin is throwing tons of combinations. What good is that if he fights a guy 2 heads taller than him? You can argue Povetkin isn't skilled enough to squash that argument but let's be honest for a second -- there is a degree of physical disadvantage you can not overcome with skill. Otherwise ODLH would dominate Tyson because he's more skilled while being the same height. Yet he gets killed by even the most shot version of Iron Mike. 5"11 HWs from past decades didn't bob 'n weave because it's a great technique or a winning concept. They did it because they had to. If they were 6"4 (which today is a small HW) they wouldn't need to bob 'n weave.
The talent pool is so small now it's comical. The base of the heavyweight pyramid is so minute, you have guys like Sam Peter operating in the upper echelons of the division. He's not athletic, he's barely skilled, yet he's there. It's awful.
Fair enough. So why dont fighters bob and weave more as well as break down the body against bigger fighters? Why not use a little head movement to slip punches? This is a much more effective technique to counter punches than letting them bounce off your arms and hugging.
