AJ has said Wilder will be finished in 2-3 years, Wilder will be 35-36, will he be like Lewis, Wlad, Holmes or Foreman (he was older) when they were that age or nearby? This content is protected
If you read between the lines, this means AJ and Hearn will marinate the fight until fall 2020. Wilder should be well preserved when he turns 35-36, but he will still be vulnerable.
Those guys controlled fights with great jabs. Wilder doesn't work around a jab so his 6'7 frame is not going to be as effective as he ages. Wilder throws them sporadically which why he easily gets pushed back and doesn't actually control fights ,he waits for opponent mistakes or has to time them . One thing he has done is not take much punishment so hes still fresh really, if he quits boxing in 3 years or less its bc he lost his belt which he will if he fights Joshua. He wont have to worry about top guys either being a non champion bc as champion he doesn't fight relevant guys so why would he without a belt ? My guess has always been he retires around 35.
Wilder compared to Holmes of 1985? Holmes was an experienced top fighter. A legend at that point. Not comparison.
Wilder relies too much on crude power as opposed to boxing fundamentals and general ring craft. Holmes had those in droves, which is why he lasted so long as a fighter at a decent level even after his time on top was over.
Not unless between now and in his 36th Birthday he faces at least 3 top 10 contenders per year and beats each of them decisively but even then it could still be thought of as something of a stretch to draw this comparison.
Large and tall hws usually have a longer shelf life than other boxers. But Wilder, while very tall, isn't real heavy. He relies alot on his athleticism, which obviously is the first to go. He relies less on technique, bull strength, jab, things that size lend themselves to that aren't negatively impacted much by age. I think he's probably at his peak right now, maybe another year or two left, and then I wouldn't be surprised to see a rapid drop off if he stays around.
In three years, Wilder will be 48-0 and the Lineal World Heavyweight Champion. Two things Joshua will never attain.
Wilder is built a lot differently than other heavyweight champions, and it's impossible to know how well his style will hold up as he gets older. I think his speed and reflexes are much more essential to his style than a boxer like Foreman. I just hope the Joshua-Wilder fight happens next if they both win. It's frustrating to see big fights never happen, or get delayed until one fighter starts slowing down. I think Wilder is at the point where he wants the biggest fights he can get from now on. He knows it's time to test himself against the best and make some cash while he's still in his prime.
