I had it 114-112 for Fury, but there were some rounds where one guy outlanded the other by 1 or 2 punches so I suppose there was a case for a draw. Now that we’re getting the rematch, we’ll see who proves to be the better fighter.
Given he failed for something else in his fight right after, maybe he was right to do so. Let's say he didn't fail a test. Do we think the fight goes ahead? Or that Wilder makes up some random injury or something like that to get out of the fight? Something that - from memory so correct me if I'm wrong - he has never done
He served his time for one and the other was for medicine he hadn't disclosed. I agree to keep form he probably should have cancelled the Ortiz fight too but then everyone in this thread would be whinging that he run away from Ortiz and then Ortiz would probably be recognised as a good HW by a lot of these dudes again. He can't win for losing.
No I think you're quite right but I personally refuse to look down on someone for pulling out after a failed drug test, regardless of what the excuse was. And like you say, there was a second instance.
I don't think his resume is great personally but I think he has a few more B level guys than Wilder which for me makes his overall a little better.
Let's also be consistent when it comes to Deontay. He makes a big deal out of Povetkin's Meldonium levels and says "he won't ever fight that cheater again" -- yet Wilder has no problem fighting boxers with past PED infractions such as Stiverne, Ortiz, Arreola or whoever else fits his cherrypicking recipe. It appears to me past PED test failures are overlooked very generously when it fits Wilder's agenda.
You realise that post said “coming off a draw with a cruiser”? I thought Hunter was the next big thing haha.
Well, Pov failed in the buildup to their fight so that instance can be placed aside. So did Ortiz but I think his reasoning of medication not being announced holds up fairly well. I mean, once someone has served their ban they're good to fight. I'd love it if fighters started taking a stance against former PED users etc and refused to fight them. J-Rock not fighting guys who won't sign up to strict VADA testing for example is a great move. It's trickier in the HW division to do that though because there's about 4 fighters in the top 100 who haven't failed a test at some point. Besides, if Wilder started to do that everyone on here would then have accused him of ducking Fury and Ortiz...
I've started to come around to Wilder, but will still post smart-arse quips about his opposition until he unifies. Povetkin would be ok tho, as would Whyte ... but I see a year of Fury + a Fury rematch as being what will probably eventuate in 2020.
I can only speculate. I think the chances are reasonable he'd have fought Pov anyway because he was kind of in a corner. If he was going to play the injury card he'd have been better off to do it earlier. However, the moment he got the slightest excuse, he high tailed it back. That much is fact.
He is, but sadly that scumbag Eddie Hearn decided it was more economically beneficial for it to end in a draw. After all, Hunter is relatively unscathed and he can still milk Povetkin for a few more matches. Hey, at least that blown up Cruiser decided to go to war with Povetkin, which is more than I can say for those full-fledged heavyweight scaredy cats Hughie Fury and Anthony Joshua.
