Anyone know the record? He's scheduled for his 4th voluntary title defense, I kind of suspect he'll make it to 5 at this point. That's got to be a record.

Not a Wilder hater, his voluntaries are below average but not as bad as his haters say, but it would be pathetic if he were to have 5 title defenses in a row without a single one even being a debatable top 10 hw. That would probably be a record as well.

Larry Holmes was the WBC and then the IBF heavyweight champion.

Out of his 20 title defenses, I think he fought TWO mandatories (Earnie Shavers and Gerry C00ney).

If so, the record is 18.

Also, Stiverne is the #2 rated WBC contender. Duhaupas is currently #4. Molina and Szpika are also currently rated by the WBC.

Everyone Wilder has fought in a WBC title fight is still rated by the WBC.

    I meant consecutive voluntary defenses.

I'm not a Holmes fan, but one thing I've always given him credit for is decent defenses. Most of his defenses were against clear top 15 hw's. So, I'm surprised if that's true that he only had two mandatories. I'd imagine he had fewer than average because of the belt swap.

Larry Holmes was the WBC champ from 1978 to 1983. and he fought two mandatories. There were seven "voluntary defenses" between Shavers and C00ney.

There was a belt swap because he refused to fight Greg Page, his WBC mandatory.

When he was the IBF champ, he didn't fight any of their mandatories.

Yes, I know they are rated by the WBC. But of his defenses, I rate Duhaupas around 15, Spilzka a couple below that and Molina about 5 below Spilzka. And I rate them higher than most people on these boards. I generally am not a huge fan of Ring's top 10, but they've got they best top 10 ranking they've had in years right now, much more accurate than WBC's.

It doesn't matter where YOU rate them. He's not the andrewa1 Heavyweight Champion.

He's the WBC Heavyweight Champion. His only concern is the WBC ratings.

Fair enough. If true, Wilder won't be in danger of setting the record for voluntaries. His defenses are still substantially worse in quality than Holmes's, though.

Everyone Wilder has defended against to date could beat Alfredo Evangelista, Scott Frank, Lorenzo Zanon, Leroy Jones, Scott Ledoux. Lucien Rodriquez and the statue of Muhammad Ali.

Wrong. His concern is legitimacy, at least in part. The WBC is lacking some. Most fans recognize his defenses have been poor. Even I, who more often than not defend Wilder, recognize this. Its a genuine problem for Wilder.

I'd probably agree, because the division has gotten a lot better over time. But Molina was not recognized to be at the contender level for this age that any of those fighters were for their age, and while the rest are fairly in line with most of the opponents you list above, they were not fought consecutively.

I remember when everyone thought Larry Holmes' defenses were poor. He's a hall of famer. I remember when everyone thought Lennox Lewis' title defenses were poor - he's a Hall of Famer.

Wilder's about to make his fourth defense in a 12-month period with a cancelled fight in there as well. He's fine.

The vast majority of heavyweight champions and beltholders never even made four defenses - let alone four in a year.

Fighters' reigns should be judged when their reigns are over.
