Williams has to make way too many adjustments to win this time around. I'm thinking he'll improve and and learn from his mistakes and make this a closer fight than last time, but he'll still lose. Williams might be able to improve some of his tactics in such a short time, but he won't be able to improve that shotty defensive of his. Quintana by decision. Something like 7 rounds to 5.
How can people say Paul Williams only lost to Quintana because he was "looking past him"?? Pleeeease. Quintana timed that ****er coming in all night long. Nothing will change in this fight. Except maybe Quintana wins by stoppage this time. Though, I doubt it. Williams has a durable chin; too bad he can't break an egg with his fists
What do you think has been winning him fights up until the Quintana fight? His jab along with his height, workrate, and activity.
Work-rate, height and size, and mostly bad competition Certainly not any of his technical attributes. He didn't land a jab all night against Quintana, the first decent pure boxer he faced. I know he was a fellow southpaw, and circled well, but jesus it doesn't say much for your jab when your 2 ft taller than your opponent and it does nothing
I'm pretty sure you didn't watch the Margarito fight or any of his previous fights? The Williams you saw against Quintana was not the Williams that we saw prior. The Williams prior was the one a lot of people thought would beat PBF. His height, reach, jab, and activity would be trouble for PBF. That was the thinking. Maybe Williams was exposed against Quintana becuase Quintana is a pretty good fighter. But he's always had a very good jab. That's been his bread and butter. Williams didn't seem to stay behind his jab as well against Quintana. Probably because he was getting countered regularly. Well see what happens.
Exactly. A reminder for those who forgot... [YT]0U-0i0GxBUg[/YT] Williams losing had nothing to do with looking past Quintana. It had to do with Quintana's southpaw stance, movement, and counter punching. Paul was making the same stupid mistakes he made against Sharmba Mitchell.
Yeah, that's pretty good ownage. But Williamd didn't really stay behind that jab and got sloppy with the way he threw his punches from the side. That left himself open. I think he will correct this somewhat and really try to stay behind his jab and use his height and reach. He knows he can't outbox Quintana so he has to use the advantages he has.
Margarito doesn't prove anything, my gran could jab him, it still looked flawed. There were a lot of fools on the Williams hype train, thats all I can say about that, you only have to look how quick they hopped off to see how fickle they are I shouldn't judge him on two fights I know, but I've not seen a great jab from Williams. The first reasonable boxer he faced, and lets get serious Quintana is no world beater, Quintana completely neutralised it with absolute ease. Shouldn't happen with his height and reach.
I agree that Williams was exposed. I think few will dispute that. But his jab was his key arsenal. That's what won him fights. It's not lightning fast but when you add in his height, reach, and workrate, it's a good weapon for him.
Well I hope you are right, and he turns up jabbing like fellow lanky welterweight Hearns, since I have actually picked him in the prediction league against all logic :yep
Any truth to the rumor that Williams didn't even spar with southpaws for his fight with Quintana the first time? If so that tells you how much he thought of Quintana. IMO he was definately looking past him.
I'm also picking him to win the rematch. He just didn't look right in the first one. Not at all. Very weak too. Q was pushing him all over the ring. And his jab had no snap on it. It might not look that different but with a little better focus and conditioning that slight edge Q had on the scorecards will probably end up a Williams UD.
