bob arum has just stated that pacquiao vs hatton could be as big as floyd vs hatton, money wise, he said theres a $60m pot. personally i don't think half as many people will buy the hype having seen hatton exposed against the previous P4P#1 fighter. its hard to sell the same people on a victory over a shot fighter in your home town, having seen you outclassed at the highest level when you decide to step up. now first time around it was easy for HBO to hype hatton, he had a padded record but one of which they could mislead the boxing public about, however hatton is now not undefeated, which was what hattons fight with floyd was promoted around. he has been seen getitng KTFO by a fighter who was not seen as a power puncher, and hatton was dropped of a punch by floyd when he was on the back foot, so what would happen when he steps into the ring with a relentless warrior with well pollished boxing skills. in his return fight against lazcano he was stunned so what would a fighter like pacquiao do, mallignaggi lost his bottle and still hatton was not able to hurt him the way cotto did, on his return hatton has done nothing to merit a fight with pacquiao. in britain i have no doubt the fight will sell, the casual boxing fans will fall for the hype before the countdown shows have been filmed. but in america i suspect the fight will not do as well as is expected, with the economic crises does the public want to waste their money on a fraud, i don't think the casual boxing fan in america will be excited about this fight, pacquiao doesn't bring the same type of marketability as floyd, he is totally different. so you in america, will you buy the hype?
due to him loosing his bottle, cotto destroyed malignaggi physically and mentally, hatton did neither.
the reason why fighters from lower weights usually square off against their contemporaries more often than higher profile fighters do is because lower weight fighters, even ones have some notoriety, don't have PPV status...... pacman's in seventh heaven right now but there's no way in hell pacman versus hatton will sell as well as hatton - floyd.
its not hype, its the best fight that can be made in boxing, and anyone who knows anything about these fighters knows it will be an excellent fight - guaranteed. as far as malignaggi, hatton beat him more convincingly than cotto did. so what if hatton lost to mayweather, a few losses didn't hurt oscar in selling fights. you don't have to have an undefeated record to sell fights. you're just a hatton hater by the sounds of it.
when he fought cotto, he was fighting infront of his home boys on his own turf, against hatton he was on a land which he had never been before, on a stage which made him freeze.
i can only speak on britain and as the original poster said,i think it will match/outsell pbf v hatton.as for pac, hatton in america i could not say
yeah and hes a pro boxer, theres me thinking hed be fine on the big stage..just like he was acting pre fight:good
your avatar and comments made you a hatton lover pretty fast. why is it so easy to pick people who have allegiances with their heart like you? don't cheapen you're fighter by making dismissive comments about others when you reflect that comment the same way....... hatton deserves this fight - more than any other brit since lennox lewis has with such a high profile fight - and i'm happy he's got it. but i'll say it again - don't be obviously pro-british on this board because it cheapens your comments.
the best fight in boxing? the best fight for boxing would be marquez vs pacquiao III or mayweather vs pacquiao, pacquiao only chose hatton because he would bring him more money, not because he is the better fighter. an undefeated record helps to sell fights, oscar was the face of boxing, he would always sell tickets in america, and hatton is far from being as marketable as oscar, in all of delahoyas mega fights it was always competative, many people believe he beat trinidad and mayweather, and at the time of his KO against hopkins he was ahead on larry merchants card. hatton however, in his first mega fight got totally outclassed and KTFO in 10 one sided rounds.
the guy who posted referred to de la hoya, so i stated the difference between de la hoya and hatton, which in the states is huge.
