I havent watched his fights since Haye, and before that brewster maybe. Cant stand heavyweight boxing . . . its been garbage for a long time
No, not exactly. Nor close. Cael has it wrong. This was a very good performance by a very good champion. His handling of Povetkin was masterful. He controlled the distance for most of the fight, delivering stinging jabs and scoring an amazing KD with a short straight shot that sent a 225 lb Povetkin accross the ring like a rag doll. When Pov tried to dive or crawl in, Wlad tied him up effectively. Not to everyone's liking, but very effective and a very dominant performance that left the second best currently active HW looking a mess.
He's always on free TV in Germany so might as well tune in. Doesn't change the fact that John Ruiz used to be more exciting than him but then again, I'm no casual looking for blood. Today however, Wlad displayed the most disgraceful and unworthy performance of a HW champ I've seen in quite some time.
I didnt like this Povetkin fight but that dosen't mean I dislike what happens to the heavyweight championship. It was a bad fight and Wlad looked bad in it but so did chubby red faced Povetkin.Wlad still is a good fighter,we know that. Sergio's last fight sucked too, still admire what he's done.
We have had some better fights recently though. and good matchups. Joe Hanks vs Andy Ruiz Chisora vs anyone (Dereck is entertaining) Tyson Fury vs Cunningham Magomed is fun to watch no matter what and he's fighting a good fighter next. All good things.
This. It wasnt his best performance and I felt like he was holding back from KO Povetkin, seeing as he almost didnt throw his signature punch: 1-2. He would mostly jab with occasional left hook. But still it doesnt diminish his achievement. He beat the best contender out there easily. Plus he fights much better vs taller fighters, Wach, Thompson and Pianeta being a good example of that. His next fight is gonna be against Pulev, who is a lot taller. All in all, i was disappointed after the fight, but looking forward to his next fight
Of course I wll watch Wlad again despite being dissapointed with his performance in general. I just hope someone like Pulev or Jennings will actually take a fight with him next and Wlad will not be forced to defend against someone like Oquendo.
