Zsolt Erdei epitomises everything that's wrong with boxing. **** him, his promoters and anyone who is a fan of him.

The sooner the retires the better and hopefully 175 can start about getting a decent lineal champ.

Depends. Erdei issued some statements before of wanting to fight Jones, Tarver etc., but he's boring and unpopular, and Universum policy is hard to follow. They threw Kotelnik first to Ortiz then to Khan, Dzinziruk might end up fighting Williams. Maybe Andreas and Sergiy will win, maybe not, but it's not about taking a brave risk but cashing out on unpopular fighters, they don't really care at Universum, just rip off some money. So if they'd get a good offer for Erdei - I doubt - they'd cash out on him too, but the LHW division is very weak. So maybe the Brahmer fight, a tough one to call, or a unification vs. Campillo - my guess would be Universum has an option on him - then maybe retirement.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I have no respect whatsoever for this joke of a champion. He has no ambition and no desire to prove himself - he'll be happy to fight a bunch of no-hopers for the rest of his shameful career, picking up some easy money in the process.

I really hope the proposed fight with Shumenov happens - Erdei losing to a guy with less than 10 fights would be beautiful.

He certainly seems to be following the "Sven Ottke" path to retiring unbeaten...safe "title" defenses at home...he has a style that's hard to define...not exactly like Ottke's but one that dosen't take too many risks...and the funny thing is, I like the guy, like I did Ottke...guys who have styles like that don't bother me at all...even like Ruiz...if it's successful, and compensates for a lack of natural talent. Why not? A lot to be admired if a guy makes it to or near the top as a "spoiler", so to speak...but sooner or later to add legitimacy to their status as "champion" or better yet "titlist"..it becomes neccesary to step up to the plate, and up their game like Calzaghre did and fight the best. If Erdei keeps it up like this for another year, he'll pull an "Ottke" and retire for sure, and it won't really mean a thing.

Who cares? He's just a typical WBO protected champion.

He's been saying that he wants a unification fight and is talking about a possible fight with Braehmer according to an article on the front page:

    http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=20408&more=1

He probably fancies his chances against Campillo because he seemed to avoid directly calling Pascal out and there isn't an IBF champ at the moment. I don't know if he normally comes out with this kind of thing but I hope he gets one of those fights.

I would fancy Braehmer or Campillo against him, or whoever wins between Woods and Simms if it's those two fighting for the IBF belt. I hope he doesn't retire undefeated anyway, I totally agree with Mckay that he epitomises everything wrong with boxing today; his record is a joke, and people claiming he's lineal LHW champ doesn't give his record any more credibility.

It's Universum. I'm sure Kotelnik, Dzinziruk, Erdei, Balzsay and Maidana would all like to get big fights for big money (why wouldn't they?), but it's the Universum policy which is a disgrace. If you are not a German citizen (Abraham, Huck, Sturm all fight under the German flag), your rule is to sit on the title and generate some money, and when the time comes (a good offer to fight at the opponents backyard), they cash out on you. Universum is having major troubles finding a network to televise ANY of their future fights, so they 'sell out' their champs if the opportunity comes. But I don't see the Kotelnik/Dzinziruk/Maidana opportunity at LHW, so my guess would be Brahmer or Campillo, a hard or a winnable fight - or both, then retirement.

I had forgotten about Erdei's very existence until I saw this thread. THanks a lot for reminding me...

People who claim this do so on the premise that Hill and Maske established new lineage without the WBC belt on the line.

I'm certainly not going to defend Universum - you're description of them is spot-on.

I just find it hard to believe Erdei is desperate to fight Dawson/Johnson/Hopkins/anyone good and he's being forced to fight sub-standard mandatories against his will.

If he was eager to make a name for himself instead of easy money, he could do something about it. Hatton and Calzaghe had a very over-protective promoter but they forced themselves into important fights.

Erdei seems to be happy making decent money with very little risk.

Hes taking the Joe Calzaghe route. Hes going to have a **** load of title defenses under the radar against craptacular opposition, then once all the current elite fighters get old enough he'll take them on, win and be considered an ATG.

Looking at the WBO rankings his next opponent will be Aleksy Kuziemski (17-0)
