Big Jess Willard was castigated by some sections of the press for retiring on his stool after 3 hellish rounds against Dempsey. Down 7 times in the 1 st round and being systematically beaten without mercy for the remainder of the fight, some scribes still found fault with his courage! They were not alone in this, leaving the arena to some scattered catcalls from the crowd Jess was actually hit by one irate member of the public, irate and unwise, without looking around Jess backhanded him off his feet, good for him! This is in Adam Pollack's bio of Jack Dempsey, highly reccomended!
It was a different game back then. I once read an article on the Gene Tunney v Georges Carpentier bout of the same era and the reporter referred to Tunney throughout as 'chicken-hearted'. This was due to Tunney's 'unwillingness' to put Carpentier away when he was helpless. Again, a different game back then.
The irony is that if there was enough time left in rd 1 for Jess to be counted out, they would’ve been fine with it. Instead, Jess incredibly persevered for another 2 rds of hell only to be criticised for failing to answer the bell for rd 4. Clearly an unjust and unqualified reaction to the first HW Champ to retire on his stool while all those before him were counted out or, in Burns’ case, saved from further punishment via due intervention by officials. Did Adam’s book happen to verify Dempsey’s 10 k bet on himself at 10-1 odds to win by 1st rd KO?
Can't blame the big guy for quitting really tbh. Hed have being with in his rights to say that s it, after the first round. The shots that poor guy took!
Wordplay .. he could not get off his stool. No different than if he could not get off the canvas and was counted out .. quitting has a negative connotation and there is nothing about Willard's performance from a courage standpoint that reflects that. We'll put that w gatekeeper ..
One of the things that really always bothered me about Willard is that he refused to shave his body hair PROPERLY before a match. And he knew it. Every time.
You don't know though, as I do not because you cannot always say whether these things are or are not good or bad or not because of the way they were trained.
Modern fighters quit like dogs in comparison. Years ago there were so many fighters the promoters and managers would have dropped them if they pulled a liston or a Tyson
Willard was right to quit, because he could have ended up with life changing injuries, had he fought on. His corner should have thrown the towel.
That's absurd, Dempsey beat him to a pulp. I may laugh at Big Jess' boxing skills, but his courage and toughness were second to none. Anybody wanting him to get beaten more than that didn't want a boxing match they wanted bloodsport in a Roman arena.
Adam casts some doubt on the veracity of the bet.It would be wrong of me to steal more from his top notch book.which is,like all his others first class!
