Chuvalo wouldn't neccesarily have to go looking for Willard, but Willard's jab is likely to be good enough to control the distance for the majority of the fight and would enjoy a nice advantage in strength to smother, lean and wear down Chuvalo when he makes it on the inside. When your best win minus Jerry Quarry is likely a Doug Jones coming off a close loss to Billy Daniels, it's hard to argue your case in fantasy match ups
Face it....it's impossible to tell. I have more faith in modern fighters and we know Chuvalo, though losing his biggest fights, was very capable of hanging in with the best in the world. Willard had far fewer fights and was devastated by a guy smaller than Chuvalo (more explosive though, I know). I'd bet on George, but it's too hard to really know.
Willard would lean on, hug, tie up and jab Chuvalo all night,...much like Terrell did....only Willard was a lot stronger than Terrell.
Willard by decision seems the most sensible bet. He had reach, movement and a decent jab and should be able to outpoint Chuvalo. George had a good chin but he would go into a shell when he faced big punchers, and Willard, although one of the worst heavyweight champs, was a big puncher. Ad to that the fact that he was big and strong and wouldnt let Chuvalo bully him, and its his fight to lose. Willars is not agressive, fast or precise enough to stop George, but he should get the decision unless Chuvalo can set a high pace and outwork him. Willard had great stamina but I've never seen him in a fight at a high pace so I won't rule it out.
I like Willard by decision good jab and fine uppercut with a sound chin.Chuvalo was a catcher.Terrell out jabbed and out mauled him, average Corletti out- boxed him. Willard would win pretty clearly imo.
I've never liked Willard. On film he looks simply awful to my eyes. Maybe I dksab but outside of some super-secret techniques that aren't shown on film, most decent, fit, motivated heavies should be able to sort him out.
Chuvalo on a mauling 15 round decision. This is not a great matchup. Teddy Brenner would be rolling in his grave at the thought of this bout on the card.
