Willard vs Johnson was a great knockout

Pollack stated that Johnson had never seen Willard fight ,that was what I meant, sorry I wasn't clearer.

I asked you what long distance fights Willard had faded in you produced nothing.
I showed Johnson had not had a paycheck since the Jim Johnson fight for which he did not clear enough to cover his training expenses, his prior last purse was 3 years earlier!
And he had lost his $30,000 bond when he skipped bail, he was broke!
Jack Curley decided on the site ,the opponent, and the distance of the fight it's all documented in Pollacks book! Johnson was in front after 25rds but at his age in his condition and the heat he could not last.
That takes nothing away from Willard he fought a smart fight and won well.

He had lost just 1 fight the previous year, to GunBoat Smith over 20rds and some thought he deserved the nod in that one.



He had a further 10 fights and lost none of them. Smith had been an alternative to Willard but he got kod by Langford and Curley felt Willard ,because of his size, strength, and durability had the best chance of pulling off the win.


That takes nothing away from Willard he fought a smart fight and won well.

If Johnson wanted money, offers were there to fight Langford, McVea, and Jeannette for $50,000 or $100,00 Its a wonder why those fights were not made, Johnson ran from them, just like he ran from a signed contract to fight Sam Langford in 1909.

All good facts, especially Willard never won a fight past round 11. He hadn't even won all his fights the previous year. Or the year before that. Johnson and his fans are full of excuses. He didn't train hard, he was hurt, it was Tuesday. Well what about the other guy? IMO the ref and the judges were more pro Johnson than not. He fouled Moran more than once, not a point was taken.

Pay no attention to it was 100 degrees outside during the fight. Weather archives show its just another tall tale.

Johnson may have been broke before the Willard fight, but that's all on him. First of all, had he just served his 1 year in prison, which he eventually had to do anyway, he wouldn't have had to flee the country. Second, he should have had the whores that he was pimping simply
raise their rates a bit. Third, if he hadn't been ducking Sam Langford he would have had at least a couple decent paydays. Last, if he had ben living a reasonable lifestyle instead of spending money all over the world like it was going out of style he may have had some cash in a bank somewhere.

Johnson didnt pimp any women he gave them money not the other way around.Johnson signed to defend against Langford and McVey in a 2 fight deal in Australia but when he jumped bail the promoter pulled the plug on the fights. Before he became champion he signed to fight Langford in London ,his purse was to be £3000 ,after he won the title he stated he now wanted $30.000 for a title defence reneging on the contract. The NSC where the fight was to have been held refused to meet his terms and in reprisal banned any black man from contesting the British National titles. this remained in place until1948 when Dick Turpin,Randy's brother was allowed to fight for a title . Whether Johnson deserved to be broke because of his profilgate ways is not the point ,the point is ;HE WAS BROKE!
