'if he'd landed a bunch more clean shots he might have been in a position to land the shots he needed get him outta there' is the situation of every fight ever. so in other words, he didn't almost have him outa there at all.
:yep If you want to be pedantically reductive about it, yes, but the OP was making the point that Williams had wedged the door ajar, enough to show a little mortality in "Superman", and laid out a blueprint for a better fighter to kick it clear off the hinges. :good
That was exactly what he needed to do, but he needed (and failed) to also consistently remember to protect his own chin while staying inside and pouring the leather on Stevenson.
IB, it didn't get him anywhere but ktfo in what 3 rounds? He could've moved more. Sting and move. Get Stevenson to lift his feet. You could see Adonis looking to solve him and he quickly realized that Williams only had the right hook. He should've moved more. You don't fight the other guys fight.
Nah, you have it backwards, outside boxing is Stevenson's game. Would've kayoed him even quicker if Williams gave him space. That left hand is most potent when he gets the full extension on it. (although he did end the night with a short one)
I thought he fought a smart fight after he figured out that he couldn't labor at the end of Stevenson's shots bent over at the waist like he was doing. But, when he came in with his hands up and was making Stevenson go backwards, that was good stuff there.
IB, the man couldn't even take Stevensons body shots. The body shots brought the hands down and Steveson ended the fight. Maybe there is a fighter who can fight Adonis on the inside, but Williams wasn't the guy. And I wasn't talking Crawford Postol movement. I'm talking "dont stay in front of him" move a lil bit. You're trying to walk down a puncher. Stupid.
He was trying to catch Adonis while they were trading. I don't have a problem with that. That was smart. But he stayed inside, and even followed. Stevenson IMO found out that Williams couldn't punch. Williams had fast hands, but really only landed with power using only the right hook. And you never follow a puncher. Once Stevenson realized that Williams only had one hard shot to hurt him with and he really couldn't hurt him...it was over. You have to take Adonis rounds. Not everyone can Darnell Boone Stevenson. Jmo...
dudes an ageing, good boxer, with one hell of a sweet left hand, not much more and that's been obvious for years. we've seen plenty of mortality in past fights, what are you even talking about?
What am I talking about? Nothing. I'm just explaining what the OP was asserting in the first place - that jumping on Stevenson and taking it to him proved effective (up to a point) for Williams, and that a better all-around fighter than Williams could bring that effectiveness further to knock him out - a not unreasonable extrapolation from the fight we saw, that has been muddled by his choice of phrasing, which is what everybody is hung up on.
It really was a very good fight, and that I think should be appreciated for that. Several shifts in tactics split between the two, dramatic swelling, an exciting knockdown, two guys really throwing bombs and trying to take one another out. Both being hit, both showing grit, power and toughness, and just enough skill to impress. Damn good 4 round fight, and Williams should be applauded for getting in there and giving it his all ESPECIALLY with his well known durability and cut issues.
