Even a world-class fighter like Roy Jones was ruined by the affects of weight hopping. He moved up 2 divisions for one fight, and then moved back down, and it ruined him. Paul Williams, you have been warned. If he's planning on doing the same, which is what it looks like as he's got a November 29th defence lined up at 147, I think it could have move of an impact than people think. How is he going to cope with dropping 10lbs in a month with a 6'1" frame?
difference is Paul Williams is moving up to his natural weight and RJJ's natural weight was light heavy
Exactly. So Roy Jones felt comfortable making light-heavy as it was his natural weight. Williams is clearly drained himself to make 147 because he's 6 foot +. That's going to have a detremental affect. Plus his body will probably adjust to the weight more (160) if it's his natural weight, so he might have a harder time moving it. Also, Jones had just over 8 months to shed the 18lbs from the Ruiz fight. Williams has to do over half of that (10lbs) in 1/8th of the time (he has just over a month).
What ruined Roy was he started getting hit on that Glass Jaw. Williams has a solid Chin. The weight is just an excuse the Roy nuthuggers and apologists use.
Difference is Tommy we don't even know who he's fighting at 147....probably another Eric Crumble like the one he beat last nite
I think Paul Williams should give Junior Middleweight a shot. He could be very dominating there and would only have to make 154.
He could potentially do well across a number of weights no doubt, I mean the likes of Forrest, Santos are going to be tricky at 154, he may or may not beat them, but he'll still probably be a top 5 light middle, same with middle the likes of Winky, Abraham, Pavlik will be tough going, but he could be a top 5 middleweight again. But if he continues hopping between weights it will cost him. He should either chose a weight and stick to it, or clean up at 147, no questions asked, that means beat Margo in a rematch, possibly beat Cotto or Clottey, then move to 154, then 160 etc. He can't keep moving up and down all the time.
If PW starts moving from 147 to 168 and then back down, then I'll agree with it, but not if he moves just 10lbs up or down, which is what happened. IMO, Paul should move to 154-160 permanently, it fits him better and nobody wants to fight him at 147. Roy moved up 25lbs, and then back down, a much bigger jump.
Williams weighed in at 157. He probably came into the fight at 160. So he basically has to lose 13 lbs. in two months. That's normal. Roy Jones beefed himself up to an unnatural weight and had to shed 20+ lbs. of muscle.
Roy put on 18lbs though, not 25. He was also a world-class fighter at the time and had 8 months to comfortably get the weight off. 10lbs is a lot of weight to shed. Especially when you have a 6'1" frame, your not gonna find a lot of fat to shred on that frame. And especially when you only have a month to lose those 10lbs.
Did Williams look fat though? He's not gonna find a lot of fat to shed on that frame as I said. He also has a month to lose the weight in.
He fights again at the end of Nov, that's two months. Again, the guy walks around at about 160. He's not doing anything that he hasn't done for a good portion of his career.
I can't count months. Sorry lol. Don't you think it would be harder to get down to an un-natural weight though rather than back to there natural weight like Jones did? His body has probably adjusted quite comfortably to 160 now.
