D-DAY FOR SEXTON AND OLUBAMIWO . . .Sam Sexton and Larry Olubamiwo meet on the 13th January in a heavyweight contest which will undoubtedly bear a huge significance on the career of each man. . The bout has been labelled by many as each fighter’s last chance to stake a claim as a contender for heavyweight honours, meaning both men will be sure to put it all on the line when they step through the ropes at York hall at the Queensberry Promotions event. A shot at the British title potentially lies somewhere down the line for the winner, and with recent holders of the Lonsdale belt, Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury, being mentioned as possible opponents for the Klitschko brothers in recent months, neither fighter wants to miss an opportunity to grab hold of a chance to potentially propel themselves to the next level. Olubamiwo ‘The War Machine’ was due to meet Chisora at Wembley in November but dropped out because of illness, however he’s sure to be fighting fit for the Sexton and said he’ll do anything to make sure his hand is lifted at the end of the contest, “It’s a huge fight for me, I trained hard for the Chisora fight but I wasn’t well enough to give a the best account of myself so I wasn’t able to fight, but training is going great and I should go in to the Sexton bout feeling 110%. This is a huge fight in terms of my career and one that I’m going to go to every length to win.” Olubamiwo turned his life around using pro boxing as his rehabilitation following a stint in prison for armed robbery, and will be sure to use all of the hard life experienced he’s gained to take through Sexton to the trenches at York Hall in this hugely important potentially career changing fight. Norwich man Sexton will have other ideas as he also looks to get his career back to the heights that saw him become a Commonwealth Champion in 2009. Since he dropped the title to Chisora in 2010, Sexton has been a man with something to prove and will be looking to show that he is still capable of being a top heavyweight contender when he faces Olubamiwo at York Hall. He said, “It’s a massive fight for me, I’m looking to get through Larry and get myself back in contention for a British title. Larry is in for a hard nights work and it’s going to be an unlucky Friday the 13th for him!” Francis ****** of Queensberry Promotions said, “It’s a huge fight for both Larry and Sam, neither can afford a loss so I’m sure we’re in for big, gutsy performances from both men.” The bout is part of an action packed card headlined by Leon Williams’ British Cruiserweight championship defence against reigning Southern Area champion, Tony Conquest, and will be shown live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 456, Virgin Ch. 546). Hot prospect Bradley Skeete also gets another outing as he looks to progress up the ranks whilst George Jupp, Daryl Williams, Charlie Hoy , John Wayne Hibbert and John Dignum also get the chance to impress the York Hall crowd.
i like sexton. thought he showed a lot of bottle going up to belfast (twice) to fight an in form and very popular martin rogan. it will be good to have him back to his best again, there's some big fights out there for him at the minute.
