I watched the fight last night and thought it was just me who had Williams winning but I'm glad there's some sense on Eastside!! :happy If you turn off the commentary, ignore the 'scorecards' it's clear that John McDermott won probably two rounds clearly. Okay he had Danny all over the place in the fifth and it could've have been stopped, but surely as the champion he was rightfully given a chance to recover.

As for the point deductions - Williams did hit low a couple of times but the point that was taken off was a legitimate body shot - McDermott's waistband was high and I think Parris will cringe when he sees the replay. The forearm 'smash' was silly but blown out of proportion. In the final round I thought he'd taken the point off McDermott for his impression of Akinwande!! Even then I scored it even as Willliams clearly would have won the round. Why would he spit out his mouthguard on purpose if he had McDermott hurt (which he did from a right hand moments before) and needed a big round??

Okay Danny did very little and has little to be proud of, but McDermott barely landed a meaningful shot other than the fifth - where he did finally let his hands go. Williams was clearly under-motivated and had probably heard the McDermott 'petrified' rumours. I gave it to Williams by one round (in my opinion a 10-8 round should only be given for a knockdown and I think the judges agreed). A rematch will probably happen before Christmas :patsch

The whole thing that so many seem to be missing is that, putting aside all the point decisions, Danny Williams was badly rocked and needed a points decision to overcome John McDermott...a UK-level fighter on his best day.

Danny looked dreadful, he's been rocked and dropped in 4 of his last 6 fights, and all that awaits him on the world stage is yet another nasty beating.

Don't be fooled by the smokescreen about the ref...this was almost as bad as a loss for Danny.

This post probably sums it up for me and if I were DW I'd seriously think about chucking it; but maybe the lure of the dosh is what spurs people on... one more fight against another John McDermott!

In terms of McDermott's conditioning, no offence to the big guy, but there's naturally big and naturally big. In these days of conditioning coaches and nutritionists, there are more than a few pounds to lose there; and maybe this would help him - speed, agility and self-confidence (and I don't mean that in a fashion make over kid of way). He's not a crap fighter, has a chin, at times threw an okay jab and is still young enough to stand off for 12 rounds. (The action was hardly a to-to-toe slug-fest!)

Bottom line is that Danny probably thought that this was an early rounds victory; in out do the business who's da daddy. For a variety of reasons - age, focus, ability or whatever - this didn't happen and he looked old and slightly desperate at the end. But I still think he won; but that probably isn't of interest to anyone from foreign shores wondering where the next British threat is coming from.

This isn't to take anything away from McDermott, he had the balls to go in there; but seriously looked as if he lacked self-belief - even if he showed that when he did fire it up, things got interesting and he very nearly pulled it off.

I think there should be 10-8 rounds given if necessary - a reward for dominating a round clearly.

Infact, I feel there should be more use of 10-10 & 10-8 rounds (particularly in the US).

    couldn't disagree more.

i scored the first round 10-10, and then gave mcdermott the 5th and 6th rounds. Of the points deduction rounds, i had danny winning those, so they became 9-8 and 9-9 rounds.

every other round i gave to danny.

but yes, it was an awful performance and danny knows it. thats why he'll vacate the british as he can't get motivated for such fights.

if he really is going to continue boxing and go for a world title i don't want to see him in with anyone with the slightest speed as he is just too easy to hit these days.

I scored a few rounds 10-10 because neither man tried to fight. McDermott looked ****ed and Williams was ****. Neither man won the rounds outright. Danny is a cheating spitter and a disgrace to heavyweight boxing. Audley should come back and Knock him out.

Robbed? John in his usual fashion came out looking like a beached whale and still couldnt finish his dinner in whatever round it was. It was an awful fight. Even my missus was laughing at the two of them. McDermott was over awed and nothing more than a sparring partner. As for Danny he needs to call it a day.His fragile psych just doesnt have a fighters mentality. And why is it in every one of Dannys fights the tape comes loose on his gloves?!!?

McDerrmot looked **** scared all fight. Williams was a joke spitting his gum shield out constanly and the various fouls. The bloke has got to resort to those lengths to beat McDermott then what will Sam Peter do to him. Williams is very dislikeable as a person so I hope ther fight gets made.

These days i tend to take most of your posts with a bucket load of salt. Who cares wether Danny is likeable or not?! I couldnt care less about that. The facts remain Danny is was and is nothing more than a domestic pro who wasnt the best in Europe and failed misreably when he was starched by Samil Sam. He got a world title shot and again he was reduced to a punching bag by Vitali. His been milling around the domestic scene for far too long and is fast being reduced into a journeyman. His got no business in boxing anymore let alone a shot at Sam Peter. He should have took his own advice and retired a few years back.

    Um, yeah, fair comment.

However, if there were no point deductions (I can think of a number of refs who wouldn't have repremanded Williams as much), Williams would have won this fight by a landslide. I did expect Williams to knock McDermott out in about 9 rounds and I thought, on the whole, his performance was poor (heart and determination aside).

On that display I see a horrible stoppage awaiting him against Peter. I'm hoping for his sake that last night was an off night and not that the hard fights, weight fluctuations and other detremental factors have caught up with him.

I'll ignore the rest of you post and just highlight quite possibly the most stupid thing I have ever read.

    Dry your eyes pal. :good
