I love Hopkins, just saw Pastrano vs. Harold Johnson and I was pretty impressed with his likeness to Willie Pep.

They're both smart fighters, good feet, good feints.... So how does this match up play out?

Pastrano had the ideal style to beat Hopkins...constantly moving, with a fast, excellent jab..Willie never gave a **** about knocking anyone out..and wouldn't be in the same place but for a nanosecond..Pastrano was diametrically opposite a guy like Kelly Pavlik, and was far superior to Taylor and Calzaghe. Willie would move all night and box as he did vs Harold Johnson, but the margin of victory over Hopkins would be greater. Pastrano W15 Hopkins, dancing all night for 15 rounds baby!!

Pastrano wins a clear decision in one of the most boring fights in history.

Nice breakdown. Pastrano looked like he could give just about any lightheavy problems. And I don't think I've ever seen Hopkins in a situation where he is forced to be the aggressor. Most fights of his that i've seen he carefully picks his spots when to be offensive. But he's usually setting up his opponents with his feet, ala Jersey Joe/Willie Pep.

Pastrano's strategy vs Johnson was to constantly retreat..constantly counter...which threw Harold off his game...and took him out of his comfort zone..it made him have to do the leading..and the ruse worked. The same thing would have worked for Willie vs Hopkins, who isn't used to that happening to him, and Willie was a better fighter than Taylor..and wouldn't have gassed out like Taylor did..hell, Pastrano could dance for 15 rounds.

Yeah, that was very very impressive.

I feel that Hopkins is a very smart fighter, I could see him attempting different things to neutralize Willie's movement. ex. leaping left hooks to the body, feinting until Willie is close to the ropes then trying to to unload..... Do you think it's just an open and shut case where Willie would just out step him the whole fight?

I believe so..styles are very important and an "on", in shape Pastrano would have the right style to beat Hopkins.

Funny thing about Pastrano -- light-hitting as he was -- he made the loudest sound hitting the heavy bag of anyone at the 5th Street Gym, and there were some MONSTER punchers.

Angelo Dundee said once that Willie could really hit when he committed himself to it..I guess Terry Downes would vouch for that..

yeah, i'm a pretty small guy 5'9 128 lbs and i make the bag yelp. not bragging, just saying, excellent technique will do that. it's a different story when you're constantly moving and not planting your feet.

J.G. did you train at 5th St. Gym?

    I'm jealous. So jealous.

Would I be wrong in assuming that Pep and Pastrano trained side by side a lot? They share a lot of the same moves.

They shared alotta the same moves outta the ring, N...They coulda been a comedy team. More likely to see 'em in a gin mill or the race track than the gym.
